Post Office cash handlers' walkout over job cuts is solid

Post Office cash handlers struck for 24 hours on Friday of last week.

The members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) are fighting management threats of 28 percent job cuts, including compulsory redundancies.

At the Thompson Street picket in central Manchester workers burned CVs in protest at the fact many will have to reapply for their jobs.

Pickets also set up a home made brazier to cook sausages for strikers and supporters.

Glasgow CWU unit rep Alan McLachlan reported “100 percent support”.

He said, “Everyone’s up for the fight, and for as long as it takes. As soon as they open the door to compulsory redundancies then it’s just going to keep coming back at us.”

The workers are also fighting for a fair pay rise.

CWU assistant general secretary Andy Furey told an East London picket line that the union was considering balloting all Post Office workers for strikes.

He said the CWU had never accepted compulsory redundancies in Royal Mail or the Post Office.
