Yes, thirty years with the Ministry of Defence.
Would that be MoD Police? Or a pen pusher at the Ministry - never mind "they also serve who only stand and wait".
Neither a Mod Plod nor a pen pusher, but I was there plenty long enough to observe that most servicemen work less hard than most postmen but are paid considerably more. How they have the cheek to expect privileges like free postage to Iraq and council tax rebates I just don't know.

Sorry but as a MOD Civilian employee you, I doubt have seen the s**t that happens at the front end. I have done 3 active service tours one included 6 months in FRY and for those 6 months I did 16 Hour days every day with no days off, on busy tasking days I would be lucky to get even those 8 hours off. So unless you have been at the sharp end your point of view holds no value at all to me.

Whoa TBT that's a bit harsh - should I start the lamp swinging and bring a bucket of sand

Those days are long gone - I doubt I could march 50 yards with a pocketful of change now let alone 50 miles with a full pack!

Yes, you've seen active service, but that's what you signed up for, not the pay or activity of, for example, a school crossing / lollipop man ! I my time with the MoD I managed and reported on both service personnel and civilians and, while with both there's a range from brilliant to scrimshankers, I don't accept that the service personnel are any more commited or hard working than the civilians, and that despite their higher pay and better conditions. The most action that some servicemen I know see most weeks, and especially the officers, is on the golf course.
