BRISTOL MAIL CENTRE BALLOT REQUEST

Further to our recent conversation I have recommended and the CWU Postal Executive has supported, an industrial action ballot request from the Bristol & District Amalgamated Branch for the members working in the Bristol Mail Centre.

I must stress that my recommendation of such extreme action is due not to a lack of belief or support of our National agreements or the concept of the new relationship, but rather because I believe in the highest standards of industrial relations and the agreements between us being upheld by both parties.

On the face of it the issues involved in this instance relate to, un-agreed traffic diverts, un-agreed resourcing arrangements and an un-agreed preference exercise. However, what really interests me is the root cause of declining industrial relations in Bristol Mail Centre, especially as it is an office which has had other Mail Centres concentrated in to it, and what lessons can be learned across the Processing function in general.

Therefore rather than seeing this situation as a negative I would very much like to invite you to join me in turning it into a positive. I believe that simply resolving the substantive issues of disagreement at this immediate time would not be as progressive as analysing the cause, resolving the issues and restoring confidence in on-going relationships.

Against that backdrop I am proposing that you and I or our nominees, along with an IR/HR expert, sponsor and chair a ‘clear the air’ session between the divisional and local key players from our respective organisations and seek to clarify cause, solutions and expectations going forward.

About time too, RM have been taking the piss in Bristol Mail Centre for far too long, when was the last time they consulted the Union on all the diverts to other MCs and flooding the MC with agency staff.
