More than ten million online shoppers are only today, Cyber Monday, starting their Christmas shopping, our research has revealed.
The study found that 22% of online shoppers have held off Christmas shopping until December. Meanwhile, one in five (19%) started their present buying by the summer, with 7% starting in the Boxing Day sales last year.
Getting in early
The study also revealed that a quarter of people (26%) have kicked off their online shopping earlier this year. For the majority (76%) the main rationale is to be better organised and reduce the stress, while 48% said it was also to spread the cost of Christmas.
Nick Landon, our managing director of parcels, said: ‘Online shopping continues to grow and people are buying their Christmas presents earlier to take some of the stress out of their Christmas shopping or to spread the cost.
He added: ‘As we do every year, we’re asking people to help our postmen and women spread the busy festive workload by buying their gifts online as soon as they can, and to post their cards before the latest recommended posting dates.’
Preparing for peak
To help deliver Christmas for our customers, we have opened ten temporary parcel sort centres and employed 19,000 extra temporary staff to help sort the festive mailbag.

As usual, it is all aimed at sorting the parcels, nothing to take the pressure off the people who actually have to deliver them!

Have had some success explaining to customers the benefit of them making a bit of an effort and providing some form of Safeplace for me to leave stuff. When ordering online most of them just tick a box saying "safeplace if out" and expect that to mean guaranteed delivery without knowing what it actually means to us.
