Cable accuses Royal Mail bosses of 'scaremongering'

Business secretary Vince Cable has accused Royal Mail bosses of "scaremongering" by claiming the universal service is under threat.
He told ITV News the universal service obligation - which ensures people can send post anywhere in the UK for the same fixed price - is enshrined in law and will not be rescinded.

He said were it to be overturned, both Houses of Parliament would have to vote to do so - which, he added, is not going to happen.

It comes after Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene warned that increasing competition in high density, low cost areas was threatening the universal service by making delivering to rural and remote areas not economically viable.

Mr Cable said Royal Mail, now it is only 30 per cent owned by the taxpayer, was free to raise capital privately - and said it had already raised £500 million to invest and compete.

He said the government did not want to see companies "whinging" about having to operate in a competitive market.

Good old vince.......sounds like hes feeling the pressure as that noose starts to tighten around his neck, not soon enough if you ask me as im one of the insignificant 1% as he put it that rejected the free shares ,which is what all the union members should have done.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I suspect that it won't be the USO that will go, but rather your Terms and Conditions!

Ofcom and Whistl etc. are already saying that the cost base at RM is far too high and that, I assume by cutting your wages etc., RM can easily cover the cost of the USO. :shock:

T&C s will start to go bit by bit, wage cuts, but then we wont be able to afford to pay our union fee.

And. of course it gives RM the opt-out from the 'Agenda for Growth' legally binding agreement because they can say that they are financially hamstrung. Which is what a lot of people on here have been saying since the 'deal of the century' was struck.

it doesn't stop them paying all the massive bonuses at the top end though does it?.....they've got plenty of money to line the execs pockets.
