And at the end of the day you'll have the Union to thank for it.

Why would this be the Unions fault :hmmmm

I accept that the CWU has not been as proactive as we all had hoped for in the past few years but they have never supported closing delivery offices to be replaced by collection centres. In fact I would have thought they would be dead against it.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

There is little opening of gates and walking down broken paths, or walking down 100-yard drives. They use mopeds/bikes still and there is less walking in a 6-hour stint than we'd do in 3. They also do collections daily. It's a blend of our system with the USA-style perimeter mailboxes.
Austria is (unsurprisingly) similar. I lived in a village of ~1000 people about 22km away from the delivery office. The local postie (who quite probably also delivered to the the village of ~1500 people 2km further away and/or the other of ~600 people at the halfway point), kept his van at home. Delivery was 5 days a week, and seemed to include about 15 D2Ds a week! (About 5 each on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays). I lived in a group of properties that consisted of 2 pairs of semi-detached houses, with a central stairwell leading to 3 flats on the 2nd floor ... Which was was then repeated twice for a total 21 calls. There where a set of letter boxes in the stairwell, parcels could be doorstepped if you signed the form taking responsibility otherwise they where either DTN'd or taken to the local PO.

... and there was none of this silly nonsense we get around here where you get a block of flats with communal letters boxes in the lobby, but some geniuses install letterboxes in their doors (it's almost never the ones on the ground floor! :arrrghhh ) and tape the box downstairs shut either!

Saw a couple of posties in/around Salzburg and they had HCT-a-likes.

Royal Mail could probably save themselves a fortune in time, fuel and van repairs if they just installed a box (and a parcelpod http://www.parcelpod.appliedstorageproducts.co.uk or similar) at the roadside for all those rural properties with long farm track accesses. But they'll never do it because they'll take a look at the up-front cost and shy away ...

Pretty sure USO prevents them doing that.

Maybe not, the USO is specific on the number of deliveries but not on the delivery point. :hmmmm

Genuine question;

At the minute seniority means the most senior people get the first choice of walks and the newer people get the crap one. If the walks get franchised the senior people will get the most profitable walks while others will be left with the crap/unprofitable walks.

Question - There would be walks that would be less profitable than others, so the postie (understandably) wouldn't bother and just leave royal mail. How will they get the s**t walks covered? Am I missing something or is this a valid point?

I think a few are being caught out these days with management wanting us to work our full hours. It's very hard to argue against being given extra work when your duty has considerably less mail/packets every day than the frame next door. Could soon be the case where it's better to have one of the less desirable duties.

Can't see franchised walks coming in the next couple of years so won't bother worrying till then

As the Franchisor( Royal Mail) they would want to give the the best jobs to the best man which in cases would not be the senior man, not sure they would ever get it through although it would be great for them.
