Royal Mail secures a bigger slice of Amazon's parcel business just a week after warning the online giant was a threat to growth.

Amazon customers can now collect their parcels from Post Office branches after the e-retailer signed up to Royal Mail's Local Collect service.

The deal was announced just days after Royal Mail warned that Amazon's own delivery network would hit its parcel business growth and demanded "urgent" regulatory action to secure the future of its universal service mandate.

It gives Amazon access to 10,500 local Post Office branches, meaning shoppers can now pick up their goods from more than 16,000 locations in total.

The online retailer said customers opting to have parcels sent to a Post Office would have to pay a First Class delivery charge and present their ID at the branch to collect their parcel.

Christopher North, its UK managing director, said the arrangement will make the process of ordering and collecting an item more convenient.

"Pick-up Locations have become the delivery method of choice for many shoppers.

"Offering the collection of packages from Post Offices is another great way of providing our customers with the highest levels of convenience."

Amazon users can already use Pass My Parcel stores, Collect+ stores and Amazon Lockers to collect their orders.

It is expecting record Black Friday sales this week and said it is offering deals up to Christmas rather than just on Friday.

The shopping event, which traditionally follows the US Thanksgiving holiday, has grown in popularity since Amazon introduced it to the UK.

their item , but we in the callers are not allowed to do this, we have to have the p739 card also.
We get a lot of customers who get text messages saying we have tried to deliver and come into
the office on their way home from work and are refused their item without the p739. Not very joined up

The service enables shoppers to choose for parcels to be delivered to around 10,500 Post Office branches, providing greater control over the delivery of their items.

Ninety nine per cent of the population lives within three miles of a Post Office branch. The initiative will mean that Amazon’s customers can order items for collection at their local branch.

Investing in IT

Our Local Collect service is made possible through a major IT solution which enables users to choose the most convenient Post Office for a parcel delivery.

It is part of our IT transformation programme, a key objective of which is to support the delivery of our parcels strategy. Delivery companies are increasingly technology companies, as they seek to provide better delivery and tracking solutions.

Modernisation

Post Office is also undertaking a major modernisation programme, including introducing longer opening hours at thousands of its branches. More than 3,000 Post Office branches have been modernised, offering more than 85,000 additional opening hours each week, with branches open from early in the morning and into the evening and around 2,000 open on Sundays.

Managing director of Royal Mail parcels, Nick Landon, said: ‘Royal Mail is a key partner for online retailers. By teaming up with Post Office to offer the UK’s largest click-and-collect service, we are enabling Amazon’s customers to have greater control over the delivery of their items.

‘We are developing services and investing in IT solutions to meet the changing demands of online retailers and their customers.’

Post Office chief commercial officer, Martin George, added: ‘The Post Office has the largest collections network in the UK. We’re delighted to be able offer Amazon customers easy access to a trusted and convenient click-and-collect service.’

is this royal mail deliverying the parcels and leaving a forms left they can pick the packet up from post offices after or is this just a delivery straight to the post offices

No wonder RM are so keen on DTN. Wouldn't want our parcels getting in the way. Does this not negate the need for DTN at all?

You know those parcels you get every day and yet you know know one will be in

On the other hand , the schools I deliver to , the staff have their stuff delivered there as they know they won't be at home

In my town there are INPOST boxes within 1 mile of everyone and COLLECT+ shops.
There was a time when there was a post office everywhere but they killed them all off

its only one drop to a PO and at least their in. Better than individual houses looking for safeplaces and neighbours.

The kicker is the punter will have to pay for delivery, why bother paying for 1st class delivery when they can get delivery free, and if it is with rm then have the item sent to their local PO and pay a lesser charge for local collect?
