A ROYAL Mail worker has been warned he faces jail after stealing cash from his bosses for almost six years.

Kevin Dunn is accused of taking more than £53,000 while working at Doxford Park in Sunderland.

The 46-year-old, of Geddes Road, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to theft between September 2008 and July 2014, during a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, but the exact amount taken remains in dispute.

Dunn, who was a trusted employee for 16 years, was warned he could face a prison term and have a large part of his pension seized through his dishonesty.

He will be sentenced in January after the preparation or reports and accountants have examined the evidence in the case.

Mr recorder Andrew Sandiford warned him: “This is a serious matter and the court will be almost certain to at least consider a custodial sentence.”

The judge said Dunn could remain on bail until the next hearing.

Prosecutor Jamie Adams told the court the Post Office may be able to get the stolen money back from Dunn’s pension pot.

Mr Adams said: “At the post office there is a clause built into the contract of employment which entitles the employer, in circumstances such as this, to take whatever steps to redress any imbalance caused by any dishonesty.

“There is more than adequate to cover the loss in this case.

“I anticipate that the pension fund will go to compensation.”

Dunn had worked as an advanced customer adviser.

It is understood his work, and the fraud, related to overtime payments.

A ROYAL Mail worker who stole more than £50,000 from his bosses in an overtime scam, has walked free from court.

Customer advisor Kevin Dunn claimed payments for hours he had not worked while employed at Doxford Park in Sunderland.

Over a five-year period between September 2008 and July last year, the 46-year-old, who was also employed as a steward at the Stadium of Light, pocketed £53,755 belonging to the Royal Mail, which he used to help cope with his mounting family debt.

Prosecutor Jamie Adams told Newcastle Crown Court: “Over a five-year period he has manipulated accounts in order to receive payments by way of overtime he had not actually performed.

“He admitted he had been receiving overtime payments, but for hours he had not worked and that he was responsible.” Dunn, of Geddes Road, Sunderland, who was a mail worker for 16 years, admitted theft at an earlier hearing.

He had agreed to sign over his pension to repay the money he stole.

Nicholas Lane, defending, said: “He is deeply ashamed, very remorseful.

“This was not a sum of money that was stolen to fund some lavish or otherwise unobtainable lifestyle.

“There was financial difficulties, loans, credit cards.

“On one occasion when he did legitimate overtime, he realised how simple the process was an in a moment of stupidity, in his own words, he started making the false claims.

“Once he made one, he simply could not stop.”

Mr Lane said Dunn has a modest home and car and was not someone who went out “drinking and partying”.

Judge Deborah Sherwin sentenced Dunn to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 200 hours unpaid work.

The judge told him: “For many years you have worked for the Royal Mail and you were a good employee to them, until you came to start committing this offence.

“I am satisfied this is genuinely out of your character.

“Given the fact you have not been in trouble in the past and you have your pension pot to repay the money you stole, I am satisfied your prison sentence can be properly suspended.”

Not quite Lounge Lizard. He has given up his RM pension to repay the money stolen. I don't know if that means his entire (16 years accrued) pension or just enough to repay the £50k though.
If it is the entire pension that could add up to a lot more than he stole. And presumably he has lost his job, which again will cost him a lot more than he stole.

Not really,in some cases he can be an MP in which case he/she is only making an honest mistake when he/she claims taxpayers money for something he/she is not entitled to.
