A Royal Mail walkout, which saw thousands of homes go without deliveries, was sparked by an allegation an employee was speeding in a work van.

Around 150 Royal Mail workers went on strike at the Dundee West delivery office to support their colleague.

No deliveries were made in the DD2 or DD3 postcodes, including Lochee, Ardler, the West End, Menzieshill, St Mary’s and Kirkton.

Postal staff returned to work as normal on Thursday, with extra staff and managers brought in to deal with the backlog of mail.

The employee at the centre of the walkout also returned to work on Thursday following the conclusion of an investigation into his conduct.

A source told the Tele the action had been sparked after a colleague was told he faced disciplinary action.

He said the action related to alleged speeding in a post van, near the yard and in the presence of a Royal Mail manager.

Tony Sneddon, secretary of the Dundee and Perth branch of the CWU, said that, following talks today, he could confirm the dispute had been resolved.

He said: “Following the intervention of trade union officers the posties are now back working as normal. There will be no further industrial action.

“The matter has been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction and I can confirm the matter is over and done with.”

Mr Sneddon would not be drawn on the reasons for the dispute, but said there were different versions of the circumstances leading to the dispute.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: “The staff were all back at work today and completing deliveries as normal.

“Extra staff and managers were brought in to help deliver mail.

“The conduct case investigation has been concluded. The employee involved was working for Royal Mail as normal today. There will be no further action.”

if its a case of speeding, however without a speed measuring device, there is no concrete evidience and it sounds like a case of the manager acting out of the bounds of his authority and is questioned for it, provoking the reaction.

A manager is well within his rights to discipline someone for excessive speed especially in the yard. However, suspension prior to a disciplinary is an overreaction if its a first offence. A slap on the wrist inside the office with the rep in attendance would surely have been a more reasonable action if the manager thought the speed was excessive.

It's probably not a secret just if someone tells you what happened it will be obvious they work in Dundee area and they could be in trouble if identified and their posts on here are scrutinised. You can be sacked for bringing the company into disrepute.

It says 'in the presence of a manager' so does that mean there was one in the van at the time or more likely one watching? I would guess there was an issue with the guys driving maybe he pulled out of the yard and almost caused an accident? If so maybe he could be given driver training, suspension is not the first or best option.
