Royal Mail left in the cold with profits tipped to fall 8% to £260m in wake of tough parcels competition

Royal Mail is expected to report lower half-year earnings this week as its delivery operations come under pressure at home and in Europe.

Operating profits before transformation costs are forecast to be down by around 8 per cent to £260million in the wake of tough competition in its profitable parcels business in the UK and its European delivery unit, called GLS.

In July the group said UK parcel revenues for the three months to June 29 fell 1 per cent though volumes were up 1 per cent, as it battles large rivals such as Dutch-owned TNT and US-based DHL.

Letter volumes, which are declining as people increasingly rely on texts and emails, fell by a lower-than-expected 3 per cent and revenues rose 3 per cent.
