The ghost of RM Christmas past. How i miss it.

Post by krussel »

Christmas is fast approaching and it simple leaves me feeling despondent and depressed with the knowledge of a double workload. Grumpy managers who will not understand why I do not wish to take out an extra’s days mail for 90 mins overtime and short tempers from delivery staff within the office.

However it never used to be this way. When I started 20 odd years ago Christmas time at RM was something we looked forward to, being a golden time of less walking and a chance to earn almost unlimited overtime.

Let me explain.

You see we only had to cover the ground once at Christmas instead of the two normal deliveries. An average delivery span back then was around 2hrs so the extra workload would perhaps add another 40 mins to the span but you were only going out once. All junk mail (mailsort) was suspended over the xmas period so you had lighter letters. Internet shopping had not even been thought of. D2d (or households as it was known) were also not handled. In fact for my first few years did not even exist.

Typically the last week before Christmas we would start at 5am and finish the delivery by noon, however the week before that saw you going home much earlier. You would be paid a set amount of overtime each day which was normally 2.5 hrs or so. If you wanted to earn extra money you could stay on when you returned from the delivery and sort outer mail for as long as you wanted. Some would still be there when the office was closed at 7pm earning 9.5 hrs OT a day.

Christmas eve had a special warm feeling in the office. We all started 30 mins early but no overtime was paid that day. All the heavy work had been delivered the day before. The night staff (remember those guys) had cracked on and sorted all the remaining mail in the office. You collected in your walks mail (in one trip) and placed it into the frame but you only took out first and dated mail to actually deliver. Typically this would be less than one bag on the front of your cycle. The office was totally clear of any Christmas related mail.

Everyone would wish each over a merry Christmas and out you would go on your bike and start delivering by torch light before most people had even got up. In fact as you tiptoed around you could here people's alarm clocks ringing. The mail was so light that all would be done in just over an hour. A quick return to the office and then back home before 8am. You arrived home kinda buzzing and not feeling totally exhausted and ready to drop as we do now.

Yes you had to go back the day after boxing day but the mailsort was still held back and you just had to clear the normal mail. Another light day and back home before 9am to return to the family and continue the Christmas celebration.

Customers respected the service back then, wished you well, gave tips and we made a very good profit despite the government taking most of it.

How things have changed. :cry
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

In mail centres everyone used to be devoluted to an early shift, 0800-1600 on Christmas Eve. But we were usually given an early 'Right of Way' by 1300. The last few years the late shift has been devoluted to 1000-1800, and if you are lucky you might get away at 1720.
No decorations, section parties or alcohol is allowed. Everyone is knackered and miserable.

I remember it just as you do Krussel, I remember managers getting us a Christmas breakfast and boxes of sweets being put on the facing tables for the staff, a big Christmas tree in the office and people not too tired to arrange a Christmas party or a few drinks together after work.

This will be my first Christmas as a retired postie - I will be seeing some of my ex colleagues for a Christmas libation if they aren't too exhausted but I will have no regrets about not doing the job now because it has changed from being a job we were proud to do at Christmas to one that we all feared as it approached. Our managers too must dread the onset as the ones in my office were good guys who supported us well and made sure we got paid for what we did - on time and in full, despite running around like mother hens trying to cover every chaotic aspect of Christmas.

This year will be different - I will be rested and looking forward to my family and I having ten days together over Christmas and all the time in the world to prepare for it. My regular postie will no doubt have a different story to tell but you can bet I will be showing him my appreciation of what he does and I hope all his other customers do too !!!

Excellent post, I didn't start as long ago as that but I've heard similar tales from my colleagues, fast forward to now and I'm really dreading a bleak few weeks with parcels up to my eyeballs, 'kin d2ds to contend with, won't be surprised as even though leave will be blocked we're a bit short staffed so reckon they'll try to keep on lapsing to free someone up to clear parcels.

Having said that the only good point last year was Xmas eve quiet for us, got off nearly 2 hours early !

Remember the good old days long before P&L was even thought of when had my own walk for years and knew all my customers. At Christmas they would give me tips, cards, bottles of whiskey and one old lady used to bake me a Christmas cake every year. People would wish me well and invite me in for a drink and show me the Christmas tree with lights.

I used to get up in the morning feeling happy, relaxed and stress free and didn't mind going to work. Managers and staff used to rub along ok most of the time and life was good. Mailsort and door to doors were held back for 2 weeks at Christmas. Packets were nothing compared to what they are now. Part timers were made up to full time and most days were able to finish well within their time.

Now I have to put up with the soul destroying monotony of doing different walks where I don't know anyone. The only time anyone speaks to me is when they are complaining about their mail being late or asking me for their mail in the street and then being abusive when I won't give it to them.

Walks that seem to drag on forever.packets through the roof, PDA's that don't work as well as tracked and the nonsense of DTN. Bullying managers, stressed out work colleagues. Daily arguments and conflict. Morale at rock bottom.

Oh yes,how I miss the Royal Mail ghost of Christmas past :arrrghhh :so there :cry :Boo hoo!

You know I think they were.

Yes I am of course looking back with rose tinted glasses but compared to what we have been left with now.

It doesn't matter how great the old days were, everybody still moaned like f**k about them then.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It was better. Sure you used to moan about two deliveries, getting p1ssed wet through, getting dry and going out again to get p1ssed wet through, then the god awful telephone, gas and electric bills for every house where if you were unlucky landed on successive days, but it was enjoyable moaning.

And we weren't so tired that we couldn't moan properly !!!
