CWU backs Findlay in Scottish Labour leader contest

Another trade union has announced its support for Neil Findlay in his bid to become leader of the Scottish Labour Party.


The Communication Workers Union said it is backing the MSP, and supporting MP Katy Clark for deputy leader.

The union represents 200,000 postal and telecommunication workers, including 17,000 in Scotland.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said: "We give our full support to Neil Findlay and Katy Clark in their leadership bids for the Scottish Labour Party.

"We need a leadership team in Scotland that can unite the party and take Labour to victory next May. We know Neil and Katy will be leaders who are committed to defending the rights of working people in Scotland and will work with trade unions to fight for social justice. We are pleased to support them."

Mr Findlay is one of three candidates seeking to take over the job from Johann Lamont, who stood down suddenly last month.

As she announced her decision, Ms Lamont, who had been leader since 2011, hit out at Labour colleagues in Westminster, accusing them of treating Scotland like a "branch office".

Mr Findlay has already won the support of a number of trade unions including Unison, the GMB and Unite, while fellow MSP and former Scottish minister Sarah Boyack has also put herself forward for the job, as well as former Scottish secretary Jim Murphy.

Nominations for the post have closed, with the new leader due to be announced on December 13. The contest will be decided by a vote involving Labour parliamentarians in Scotland, members of the party north of the border and affiliated trade unions and societies.

Jim Murphy is an absolute shoo-in for the branch manager of the Labour party in Scotland. But it makes absolutely no real difference who wins the contest. They'll resort to the "Bain principle" of SNP bad, do whatever Ed says and fail to come up with any credible policies.
