Eltham Royal Mail staff morale 'lowest ever' over cuts

The postie, who did not want to be named, claims that, since changes were made around 18 months ago, staff at the Eltham delivery office are being given longer rounds to do, with even more types of mail to deliver.

According to his claims, staff are sometimes working four hours longer than usual to try and fit in their rounds, but are still paid the same as before

It is claimed this had resulted in complaints from customers about mail not arriving on time, with sometimes whole bags not being delivered at all that day. He said he was aware of some people who had not received their post until 10pm because of the resulting chaos.

He said: "People are given workloads that they simply can't do and then they're told they've got to do it.

"I've had people coming up to me saying they've only got their mail at 10pm. Bags are being left over because the walks haven't been completed.

"We've told them the walks can't be done and they haven't changed them, they've just left them the same."


And he also said that staff who do raise concerns are sworn at or are told to go somewhere else if they don’t like it, while vacancies are filled by part-timers to cut costs.

He said: "It's got to the stage where there are two to three bars we can't drink in. I've been confronted by two old women in the street.

"You don't want to be walking through Eltham high Street in uniform. I get people coming up to me telling me they haven't received their mail that day."

He went on: "The managers say to us 'if you can't do it, you're not good enough for the job'.

"We've had some people who've walked out. They decided they just can't do the job anymore. We've had so many people this year start and leave.

"People are running around the office like headless chickens. Morale in Eltham is absolutely at an all time low. The staff are scared of the management and their jobs are consistently being threatened."

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: "Royal Mail made changes to our local delivery operations in SE9 postcode mail as part of our ongoing modernisation and transformation programme.

"These changes are essential to respond to changes in the postal market, as we are now delivering fewer letters but more parcels. Our changes help to safeguard the future of the service and place the company on a viable and sustainable footing.

"The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the delivery route. This may be later or possibly earlier than previous delivery times and we apologise if customers have seen an impact from our changes."

He added: "These changes have required a period of adjustment for our staff and we have policies and processes in place to deal with any concerns from staff about the new ways of working."

The problem is that Royal Mail initially stopped recruiting in the South East Postcode as they believed TNT would be delivering by now. Sick leave is high across the South East , some offices are still absorbing and there is a failing revision in Brockley.

Quality has nose dived and Royal Mail are now even streaming first class in some offices in order to get a delivery. Obviously there are still 8 delivery offices who have yet to do a transformation revision.

Royal Mail have now agreed to recruit staff but it takes over 12 weeks to get somebody in due to interview and security process.

One of our failed mc managers who didn't have a job at MP went there about 20 months ago.

. Obviously there are still 8 delivery offices who have yet to do a transformation revision. .

What's obvious about those offices and their location not having had a transformation nearly 5 years on - are the vans the wrong colour.
