Why not? You get back to the office and put the packet on the shelf, where it is available, (subject to opening times).
Not in our office, all returned items get handed back to the callers office where they are booked in
We have been telling customers to leave 24hrs before going to pick up items for a couple of years at least
Same ^^

Ha ha ours get chucked into a big pile where they are lucky to get booked back in before 8 the next morning. And people queue from 7am , rummaging for a packet , world class !
All "notice left" items get booked in same day before the Callers Office close and next day when Callers Office open .... ready to go. ( average 300 booked in every day ). All done by one person in Callers Office...... booking items in ....and serving the customers.

Not really practical in a large office where the average duty might bring back about 10-20 parcels.
That would be 100 duties trying to stack about 1000 parcels on the shelves at the same time. We dump them in Yorks and the callers staff deal with them, but they are available for same day collection.

Why not? Because when you work in an office with 100 walks you don't put it back on a shelf. You put it in a York based on which postal area you are coming in from and someone else sorts it out and puts it on the correct shelf. Depending on what else those staff might have to do it can take some time for all the parcels to end up on the shelf ready for collection. Our default time is to say 24 hours, effectively the next day which is what the new form says. The exception is specials, which go straight back into the locker and are therefore ready for collection not long after we get back. On the current form you can say specials are ready for collection in however many hours it's going to take you to get back (let's say 4 hours for example). Unfortunately the new form doesn't allow for that. Guess they couldn't think of everything.
So what can we do to compete with our competitors? I know, lets make it so you can collect your parcel the next day instead of the same day like we do now... Great idea!
Don't RM realise people want their parcels ASAP and if we can do it on the same day then why the hell not!!

If people wanted them asap they'd either be in or send them to their place of work!

So you want people wasting a trip to the callers office to pick something up that hasn't been returned yet? Our callers office (like many others i guess) closes about 30mins after our duties finish so there's next to no chance of customers being able to pick up their item on the same day
My office has about 50 walks, or duties rather as most are rurals. We all write down returns when we get back and put the packet on the correct shelf. I should have known that no office is the same.
When we return back to the office we scan all specials and tracked as available for collection. So customer gets email (tracked) saying they can collect but then have a card saying wait a day!

I have to agree 100 peer cent, we have to be better to succeed in this brave new world not worse.
