There are some really fussy people out there. I just ignore them and walk on. We don't have time for small talk these days. But then i could just be playing russian roulette with me p45!! lol

You've delivered round mine then?!! People certainly do not expect the postman to be knocking on the door at that time!!

What if the porch door has a letter box in it? You put the letters through the door and leave them but you wouldn't leave a parcel in the same place?IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:Which is "doorstepping" and leaving mail in an insecure location, doing this is playing a loaded game of P45 Russian Roulette.postslippete wrote:some customers are quite happy for their parcels to be left inside their front door if its a porch and kept out of sight. None of us should be touching porch doors to see if they are unlocked if they look properly shut.

If the parcel goes through the porch door letterbox, you do not need to touch the porch door handle.blisterfeet wrote:What if the porch door has a letter box in it? If you open that porch door and leave letters and/or parcels inside that porch door, you have left mail in an insecure location, discipilinary in waiting when something happens.

Re: Fed up with complaining customers
As I recall the decision was with the pmn what was considered a safe place. A woman in callers the other day said other couriers leave them in her blue bin
I wouldn't consider that to be a safe place but personally I would leave it in an unlocked porch.

Re: Fed up with complaining customers
So you do a mon-fri job, that means as your local callers office closes at 2pm you have to wait until sat to go get your parcel, you drive 4 or 5 miles to local d.o. then find that everyone else who works mon-fri is doing the same, you then queue for 20 mins to half an hour, get your parcel then arrive back home 11/2 hours later. Yes prob a worst case scenario but it does happen.someone might be in...but they might be sleeping, taking a shower, getting ready for work, getting the kids up for school, whatever. Most people are busy at that time of morning if not sleeping. If my alarm was set for 8am and someone woke me an hour early- I wouldn't be happy.

Or you break off giving the kids their weetabix, walk all the way to the front door, get your parcel off your postman, this takes you all of a minute, don't forget you sent off for it so you're actually eager to receive it not really annoyed cos you're breakfast routine/cleaning your teeth has been disrupted.
I know which I'd prefer !

Re: Fed up with complaining customers
It is actually a lot more complicated than that TB. Some years ago my mother had an old man enter her house, sit down on the sofa and stay there for what turned out to be three hours. the police were called and they could not remove the guy as he had not forced entry and had displayed no intent to cause damage. He just kept saying he was tired and would leave when he was rested, which he did. bizarre ! There has to be an intent to cause malicious damage for it to be a trespass. So in this case, the door being unlocked and a postman dropping off a parcel would not be classed as trespass.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Yes its illegal to open their door. Its also an invasion of privacy.
As a postman you have implied legal access to the point of delivery. When you open the door, you passed the point of delivery and are technically committing trespass.
The other customers, have given you specific permission so you should be okay there, but still if they deny giving you permission, then you can still, theoretically be done for trespass.

Had a bloke a few months back who kept his motorbike in his front garden..........
Comes running out to say can you please shut the gate as there are bike thieves about, like a little wooden 2ft gate is going to make all the difference

Re: Fed up with complaining customers
What I was getting at is if the porch door has a letter box and you push the mail through the box and it is on the floor that's ok. So what's the difference between opening the same door and placing a parcel on top of those letters it suddenly becomes insecure does it? It's still the same delivery point of you deliver letters or parcels inside that porch.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:If the parcel goes through the porch door letterbox, you do not need to touch the porch door handle.blisterfeet wrote:What if the porch door has a letter box in it? Re: Fed up with complaining customers
The difference is if you don't open the door you can make a reasonable assumption that its secure. As soon as you open the door its insecure and you can't leave mail insecure.blisterfeet wrote: What I was getting at is if the porch door has a letter box and you push the mail through the box and it is on the floor that's ok. If you "know" the door is unlocked and you are leaving mail then in an extreme case the manager can conduct you. But your defence is that without opening the porch door you made a reasonable assumption so you would be ok with letters in this scenario, but it'd be difficult to explain a parcel thats too large to fit the letterbox.
However, and I am not being judgemental, if you continue to open the porch to leave mail, at least you are doing it in the full knowledge of the possible consequences. As they say - its your choice.
