Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
I just don't know anymore. When we were a State owned company we offered a service and customers did not dictate their terms - they may request products and features but not request a better service than is available to everyone else.
Now we are privately owned, has this changed already?
Can Royal Mail now charge e.g. play.com the same price as amazon.co.uk when Amazon is get a better service?
Does this mean Amazon is going to start demanding a different price for delivery into cities otherwise they will just give us rural packets?
Tell Amazon to sod off and don't take any of it's packets this Christmas - oh hang on, we can't because we are a service ...
Grrrr

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
RM should be concentrating it's efforts in making customer habits change.
i.e people internet shopping but never at home to receive item.
Why not have a different delivery address set up, it's not rocket science.
Aunt Maud round the corner
Their Workplace
etc etc.
We are living in a 'finger snapping' world where everyone expects and demands things now, now, now but forgets the human element. It's all so easy to complain because an item wasn't delivered during the small time frame people are at home.
"It's Royal Mails Fault" is all you ever see.
Here's a wild thought...
Offer a service to people that they can have their items delivered to a RM location. - upon arrival into the RM location an address scan is done which generates a pre-provided email to the recipient to advise them the item is ready for collection.
People who are out during the day but who are internet shoppers can subscribe to this service upon providing an email address etc.

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
Dangerous thoughts, in my opinion. I'm getting paid to sort the packet, load it, take it down the driveway, chap on the door, then the neighbours' doors, write out a card, load it back into the van and finally book it in at the end of the day. Take all that off me (x10 or so for a regular day, probably at least 60 or so on a quiet week) and that'll be one heck of a pay cut for me. No thank you very much!

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
royal mail has to start doing this for every parcel and packet to survive
all our competitors do it and customers demand it
with DPD you can even log on to thier website and see how near the van is that will deliver your packet and how long he will be before he gets to your house
where technology comes into things and packet and parcel tracking we are miles and years behind every one else

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
DPD is more like Parcel Force. We delivery postmen are not simply delivering parcels and we are not always in a van... And we also have letters to deliver, specials to branch off and deliver before 1pm.
Why dont they simply bring van drivers back if they want to compete with the competitors who simply deliver parcels. BTW, no one can compete with the blokes in the Ford Mondeo delivering just parcels in their local area - they are cheap as chips, gets exploited and deliver a poor service...
Compare like with like, please.

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
They all have time sensitive deliveries as well, I worked for APC years ago, we had 7.00am, 9.00am, 10.30am and Noon timed deliveries, spread over 4 postcode areas (GU1,2,3&4) was a complete pain in the arse.chrisj wrote:specials to branch off and deliver before 1pm.

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
I don't not really understand what your point is? As you are not a delivery postman, it is perhaps easy for you to discount some of our concerns and real issues...
Companies like RM should be cautious about trying to compete with those that are likely going to drag the quality of service down. Some of them might be here today (making loss leaders in the cheap services they offer) and they will be gone (bankrupt) tomorrow.
We have given you the real issues here - from a delivery person's point of view; it is time and the right tools and equipment.
These whole issue cannot simply be laid at the feet of the delivery personnel - perhaps, they can start by reducing the pay for people doing menial jobs in the MC and then a pay cut for the rest of us in other departments. Invest in IT and the right tools, bring in more vans (if they are that bothered about competing on equal footing) and/or bring Parcel Force on the same footing as the competitors and so on.
Delivery to Neighbours and Tracking on all items from Amazon and some others will just be applying sticking plaster to the situation (Amazon will still go eventually). The market for Parcel is now liberated/open and Royal mail can only compete up to a point but will always be chasing the competitors that do not deliver letters or have USO.
And who says that customers want to be tracking every single item on the tablets or PC? BTW, we offer some tracking but at a cost - should it be free and where is the time going to come from to track every parcel - not just Amazons?

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
on line tracking won't work as it depend on our workload and tiredness. I mean say we give estimate in 4 hours and it take 4 hours 12 minutes consumer will be pissed off. I won't like to see this option added as a postman.

Re: Scanning all Amazon Parcels
The tracking of all parcels is going to happen at somepoint, every other courier offers and rival company offers tracking as standard. I wouldn't be surprised to see RM be split up a bit eventually with the letters and large-letters being one business and parcels being part of a new company with possibly PF merged into it
