Union celebrates political fund ballot result

CWU members have overwhelmingly agreed to retain the union's Political Fund in a ballot which saw a Yes vote of nearly 87 per cent.




Political Funds allow trade unions to have a political voice and campaign on issues that affect their members.

All unions are required by law to hold a full postal ballot of their membership every ten years to confirm the retention of their Political Fund.

"This is a great endorsement by our membership of our Political Fund."

Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: "This is a fantastic result for the union. We would like to thank everybody who took part in the ballot as this outcome was vital in allowing the CWU to continue to campaign effectively on behalf of its members.

"This is a great endorsement by our membership of our Political Fund. We look forward to continuing our work influencing politics and fighting to change matters that affect workers everyday lives, including low pay and insecure employment contracts. This result means we can carry on making people's lives better inside and outside of work."

Any member may obtain exemption by sending such notice to the Secretary of the
Branch to which the member belongs and, on receiving it, the Secretary shall send an
acknowledgement of its receipt to the member at the address in the notice, and shall
inform the General Secretary of the name and address of that member.

In the same vein that a union position should not be recognised unless 51% of those eligible take part then so for the Political Fund - you'd hardly call it a resounding agreement by the membership when 68% didn't vote. I suppose we get what we pay for, mediocrity in all things.
