The simple reason is Amazon have a policy that if anyone claims they have not received their item they send out a new item and claim compensation off Royal Mail. So the scan at the doorstep allows proof of delivery and secures more Amazon parcels which secures jobs.
will this now mean royal-mail will charge amazon to deliver there items this christmas?.
may be better to let amazon parcels get delivered in foreign number plated cars like they are during the rest of the year.

amazon are delivering in our area now. the only items we do is the very small stuff which isnt much since their minimum order for free delivery poliocy.and ofcourse we do all the rural areas. i doubt they will pump more business into us. but if it helps secure more jobs then so be it.

you will probably find RM get all the small, postable items, DVD's Cd's Games etc and their own couriers ( if already in your area ) will end up with the big stuff, self employed, 50p a parcel.
working their nuts off for a wage.

fish more attendance calls including door step scan for Amazon and eventually tracking of all parcels mean extra attendance calls which means extra time on delivery and with one pass , Mail optimisation and bench merging combining to reduce indoor time outdoor becomes the battleground and that's why I do not support the outdoor planning values validation as this Royal. Mail agenda is too reduce the planning values for outdoor.

For the record Amazon are paying more for the door step scan and Amazon use Ofcoms licence and contract to charge compensation for not delivering their items on time and this is why Royal Mail want first time delivery as the biggest complaint for most postcodes now is 739s and the average complaint to deal with is over £30 via call centre and then compensation.

I am sorry to disagree with these 739 complaints and the associated costs... When customers complain about P739, what exactly are they complaining about and how does this lead to RM having to compensate them?

Customers will always complain about P739 because we can only really deliver to people that come to the door - of course, that was before DTN... If the postman follows the correct procedure then there should be no way for customer to claim compensation on delay of mail.

Why do we have this useless stats and information trotted out all the time. Sometimes, we simply cannot deliver an item of mail; even with DTN - it is as simply as that!

There should not be any battle ground as long as we work to the time we are contracted to work. As long as people keep coming in early and trying to flex the job and as long as some rounds are smaller and easier than others, RM will continue to add more work to the delivery staff. And the reduction in volumes does not always compensate in some areas.

I was over today by 30 minutes - I should not have taken the lapsed walk and I had some many returns (at least 20-25 items) - not a single Amazon item... In fact, I saw a bloke in a van delivery Amazon parcels including doorstepping a house for which I had 3 parcels return to the office. He doorstepped in a house that is on the way to a local school, where people regularly go for walk, dog walking, horse-riding and to a local park. It might have rained and the people might be on half-term hols...

Is that what we are supposed to do?

Some customers are never in at the time we deliver items, why can't they simply just use a neighbour's address that is likely going to be in. Or why not collect at the office, leave a safeplace or don't even bother us delivering the item - come and collect straight at the delivery office upon receiving a notification?

It does not matter what time or day (weekend for example) you arrive at some addresses some customers will never be at home. As a postman, I will never be at home to receive an item - so why bitch about it when someone leave a card.

And on my days off, what if I was on the bog or in the bath and I could not hear someone knocking because I genuinely do not have a bell or I am always on the computer or listening to the radio/music - why should the postie now take my recorded delivery letter (and packets) to my neighbours when the postie/neighbours knows that I am in as they could see my car and windows open...

We already have a tracked product, no doubt what Amazon want is RM tracked without actually paying for it. RM will make a loss effectively giving Amazon Tracked for free, and then end up deep in the s**t when every other retailer want tracked also for free, or say they will also use a.n. other courier. RM need to MFU and tell Amazon to send the packets they want tracking via RM tracked and pay up or to sod off and find a courier who are willing to deliver their parcels at a loss.

Oh wait didn't amazon set up their own logistics company, are they finding it too unreliable and/ or expensive? This is the top of a sleep slope for RM where the customer is going to end up dictating price, a lot like Tesco et al dictate the price they pay for eg. milk.

I don't see what all the fuss is about

Letterbox items - will add about 5 seconds for each item

Big Items -scan it when you're waiting for them to answer the door. And if its a P739 scan it again when walking back to the van. Might add 5 seconds to write out a barcode on the P739
