Query about neighbour stealing post and 1st delivery point

Hi, I have an ongoing issue in my building with post being stolen by neighbours when the postman leaves it in the communal hallway instead of delivering it to our doors.

The main problem being new neighbours which moved in a few years ago. They will happily nick anything that doesn't belong to them if it's in the hallway, including post and parcels. I'm usually always in around the time the postman comes, but the post is always left downstairs in the hallway even if the service button is active / the door is unlocked. If there are bigger parcels, I'll find a card downstairs saying 'no access' when they would have been able to buzz/use the serv button at that time. In fact, I'm pretty sure the postie opens the door to come in as the post is always sitting on a little table when I find it. I understand they are not obliged to deliver it to our own doors - but the lack of respect from our neighbours is ridiculous. I'll find post that has been ripped open (ie birthday cards, money missing) or parcels that are ripped open and left half empty. This has been happening for a few years since these assbags moved in, on and off (sometimes different posties deliver to my door and it stops, but there are probably more than 15 posties servicing this area, always different).

I want to ask how we can solve this problem, because when I phone up my landlord to complain, they say to phone the police- the police say to phone royal mail- royal mail say to contact the landlord- and so on and so forth!

My neighbours are well known to the police but they said that without concrete (ie physical) evidence, they can't be convicted. I'm also worried about confronting them because I don't want to start a war in my own building (not with junkies).

I can't afford to pay for an external PO box and I can't have post delivered to my place of work.

What can I do to stop this?

You might be best to ring or go into your local office and speak to a manager, explain the problem and he might ask the postie to go into your block and post properly. Or you could ask your postie yourself, if you have a regular you might even want to lend him a spare key to make it easier to get in.

Thanks for your reply! I have tried to catch the postie but they change all the time. Do you know how I can find a number for my sorting office? There are two in the city I live in and when I went in to ask they told me to call RM customer services (which then advised to phone the landlord/police)?

If you are very concerned I would go back to the office that gives you the red cards when they can't deliver, and ask them if you can set up "Call and Collect" service - take proof of address and ID and they should be able to do it for you.

Problem is you have to collect at least every 18 days, and may be asked for ID every time, but it does mean your post is more secure.

As above, you could enquire about the Mail Collect™ service. It is designed predominantly for businesses but is a free service which allows the Delivery Office to hold your mail securely on site for you to collect at your convenience. (You are usually issued with an ID tag which, after your first collection/visit, will be the only thing required each time you make your collections)
