Delivery staff walk out in support of fellow worker - new

STAFF at a Royal Mail delivery office downed tools in support of a fellow worker.

The delivery workers at West Park delivery office on Coombe Park Lane walked out this morning over a disciplinary issue involving a member of staff.

President of Plymouth Argyle Chris Webb, former divisional representative for Communication Workers Union, tweeted about reports of the walk out shortly before 10am today.

A nearby resident who witnessed the incident said it looked as though the whole of the delivery team had downed tools after a disagreement with management at the office.

“All of the delivery staff were stood outside of the entrance to the car park so there were about 30 of them,” said 43-year-old Gareth James who lives at West Park.

“Some were sitting down in chairs – I think they were expecting it to be a long sitting.

“It was quite orderly.”

Mr James, a website designer, said he heard from workers that a female member of staff had returned to the office late and still had letters to be delivered.

The walk out did not last long, however, as the members of staff returned to work after reaching an agreement with the management team.

Ralph Ferrett, secretary of the CWU for Plymouth and East Cornwall, told The Herald: “There was a brief incident at West Park delivery office but that has been resolved and they are back at work.

“From my understanding, it was all very brief and resolved very quickly.

“There was not a dismissal, there was a problem with some sort of a disciplinary issue.

“It was nothing serious at all.”

President and chairman are 2 different things.
