First statement, given to us by the Lecturer, NEBSMS Course..National Examination Board for Supervisory/Management Studies...

"Management exists for ONE THING...Communication. Communication from the business owners, down to the workers."

That's it. End of.
Do THEY know???
Doubt it...

That's a rather damming indictment on the state of management nationally. It isn't difficult, as you say all the tools are there to improve the situation like WCM yet management seem unable to implement the most very basic of tasks.

I appreciate your courage in coming on to these boards to highlight such deficiencies in the management structure but be careful, there are sneaky managers on here who won't think twice about grassing you up to win a few snivel points with their boss.

Yes it's a good job we have hundreds of managers who couldn't run their own offices now masquerading as WCM managers.
A few diagrams, some wall charts and graphs and some one colouring in drawings a six year old would be proud about is going to turn around our fortunes. :cuppa

If WCM is the answer we are doomed sooner than I thought, either that or we will run out of money after they have thrown everything at it,including my pension.

We are all doomed. Three years max and FutureRM will be the only shareholder left - with a bankrupt company.

It is a sad indictment of management that one comes on here to run down the people that are keeping him in a job. Many HARDWORKING posties work tirelessly even though in reality they are fcked from the job, to make sure that ALL of the post is delivered on the day it is received into the delivery unit. Royal Mail benefit from thousands if not millions of unpaid hours per year from people that are prepared to make sure it is all delivered, and by many people in Sub Units that are employed by the Co-op and others to do a admin roll, but end up throwing in mail to help the staff out because they are under resourced. Bottom rung managers do have their own problems with Royal Mail senior management, which cannot be easy because they are not allowed to manage, they are order takers and cannot control the mindless resourcing that is going on at present. However they make things far worse for themselves as they take out their frustration on the delivery staff and all this does is alienate the DS against them and instead of having motivated and helpful staff, they have the exact opposite. Probably the reason why we have this sad manager spieling out such utter crap.

The problem with this business is the same one we have had since 1997 in that every single person at the top is on short term contracts 4 to 5 years and they are given the same brief with the same rewards, cut staff make profits and get millions in bonuses if you achieve it which they always do, in all my years on here ive always seen this to be true, we have the most knowledgeable hardworking conscientious, (mostly) in this industry and yet we are led by self serving Donkeys. :arrrghhh

How many collection failures?

Seems to me that many posties cant even grab the basics let alone run the place.

I would imagine that a high level of customer complaints would have to reflect on the quality of training and the quality of management. It's a poor workman that blames his tools which in this case would be the posties themselves. Do you have a high level of customer complaints in your office?
There is a high level of customer complaints nationally.

Good job we have WCM to find out which posties are incompetent, retrain them as required and if they still cant perform they need to be dismissed as quickly as possible to make way for someone that can do the job.
lol, this must be a wind up
A major wind up indeed

Does WCM still exist? It seems to have gone away in our office. Most of the crap stuck on the walls has fallen off and been swept up and no managers have mentioned it for months. Good riddance to a waste of company money.

If I may be so bold - if RM management are so great and the training and WCM so effective, why do you have posties that can't even get the basics right.

If a postie is incompetent then how did they get taken on after their trial period - only managers can make the decision on whether to keep them or not.

Does the management/coaching/training environment take into account staffing or work load on a particular day. Is management required to assess their own faults and assess how they impact on their subordinates.

Are managers aware or even understand the ethos of collective failure. If one person in my team fails - I have failed. If my team fails - I have failed. If I fail I can only blame myself.

I already know the answers to these questions. In the forces I was the equivalent of a LM/DOM mostly in charge of 40 people, sometimes as many as 200+, but at least in the forces they train you to understand the difference between managing and leading. In RM they manage.

Royal Mails one basic failure, and it can only be down to Managers - although there is a formal process for training its never taken to its full fruition either because of the current managerial culture that getting mail out is the only important factor, or because of pressure from above the Coaches aren't able/allowed to train as effectively as they should. Yet when that training fails, its not the fault of the lack of training it's the incompetency of the individual.

Are there incompetent lazy posties - yes there are just the same can be said about management. But if there are incompetent people in post who are identified and not dealt with at the earliest opportunity then that is a managerial failing, its certainly not the fault of their colleagues, and it certainly does not excuse an autocratic management style as opposed to strong leadership.

Well by and large you get what you pay for and that's not to say we are badly paid BUT many good people cannot manage on 24 hour contracts and decline the offer of employment even though their current position pays less per hour but is 40 hours and so I say you get what you pay for.

A lot of it is to do with such terrible communication between the ranks, we only hear what comes down from the top, but the senior management couldn't give a toss about the concerns of fronline staff who are effectively the face of the business.
