Whistl loses challenge to Royal Mail's tax exemption

LONDON (Reuters) - Whistl, a firm launching a rival delivery service to Britain's dominant player Royal Mail, on Thursday lost a High Court challenge to have the former state-owned postal operator's VAT exemption removed.

As part of its status as Britain's six-day-a-week universal service provider, Royal Mail is exempt from paying VAT, currently set at 20 percent, on revenues it receives from its service to deliver mail collected and sorted by rivals.

In a lengthy case against Britain's HM Revenue and Customs, Dutch-owned Whistl, formerly known as TNT Post UK, argued that the exemption contravened EU law, but the UK High Court ruled on Thursday that it was compatible.

Whistl said in a statement to Reuters it was reviewing the judgement and would then consider the legal options for appeal.

"Only because of much higher efficiency is Whistl still able to compete in the market at price levels comparable with those of Royal Mail," Whistl said in a statement, adding it would review the judgment and then consider its options for appeal.

hmmmm higher efficiency is that the word now to describe 0 hour contract, minimum wage, no holiday or sickdays no pension basically slavery I think is what they mean.

Quite right there , even with all that efficiency savings they arnt making any dosh

While they can still dump the End To End rubbish onto DSA whenever they want , they will still be around

I thought it was the height of evasion when I saw a director of operations of TNT as it was then claim on TV they delivered 6 days a week without qualifying it was three days in one area and 3 days in another, hardly the same as our 6 days a week.
