Re: Driving RM vans after drinking alcohol
I think people might have missed the point here. RM Vans are not meant for social use, get caught doing so and you will be more then likely down the road.

Overnight retention policy Appendix 2 Section 22.
11. I warrant that at all times I will be fit and able to use the vehicle or equipment. This means ensuring that I am ready for duty in a fit and alert condition and not under the influence of drink or drugs.
Under the influence...not over the legal limit.

So "not under the influence of drink" means "not over the legal limit"fishtank wrote:Overnight retention policy Appendix 2 Section 22.

What's wrong with this is "at all times" in "I warrant that at all times I will be fit and able to use the vehicle or equipment".fishtank wrote:Overnight retention policy Appendix 2 Section 22.

There's not much likelihood of being called to drive at 2am on a Sunday morning but, taken literally, these conditions would prevent us from going out for our usual several pints on a Saturday night.

Under the influence has nothing to do with the legal limit.Lounge Lizard wrote:So "not under the influence of drink" means "not over the legal limit"
A person is under the influence of alcohol when, as a result of drinking any amount of alcohol, his mental or physical faculties are so impaired as to reduce his ability to think and act with ordinary care." Ill. Pattern Jury Instr.-Criminal 23.29 (4th ed.)
Do you really want to leave that decision to a Royal Mail manager?

Re: Driving RM vans after drinking alcohol
Since the document relates to driving a Royal Mail vehicle to and from work only it can be reasonably assumed it relates to driving a vehicle to and from work only.Lounge Lizard wrote:What's wrong with this is "at all times" in "I warrant that at all times I will be fit and able to use the vehicle or equipment".![]()

Re: Driving RM vans after drinking alcohol
so would it be ok to finish work and get shopping in sainsburys and then go home ? or pick up the mother in law on the way home ?gb93 wrote:Is there an official policy on driving after having alcohol.
Example, finished shift and have 1 pint before taking van home.
Is that a sackable offence even if under drink driving limit.

i don't get it - when you finish work (sign out) you are off duty so you shouldn't be ok in any state to drive a company van because the insurance isn't in place.
Why are lino's paid full-time ??

Re: Driving RM vans after drinking alcohol
that scenario would be classed as not commuting home. Work finished and you then went elsewhere albeit on foot then traveled home that is social use of the vehicle regardless of whether you left it at work or not so regardless of drinking alcohol or not you are driving uninsured and without consent that's two charges which alone could lead to loss of jobLounge Lizard wrote:No it's not "for your own social activities"rehabron wrote:Although by having 1 pint you are more than likely to be under the drink drive limit however the official line taken would be that you are allowed to take van home for business convenience not to transport you for your own social activities.gb93 wrote:Is there an official policy on driving after having alcohol.

You should have taken the van to your home first then went for your pint.![]()
It's "finished shift and have 1 pint before taking van home", the Delivery Office canteen shut so it's a pint in the pub across the road.
