Highlands mail through Edinburgh?

Totally random geeky question I know, and I'm not sure whether anyone can answer..

I can't help but have noticed that anything posted in the Highlands, seems to get postmarked as "Edinburgh Mail Centre" - I know the Inverness centre isn't the biggest so is it mainly a delivery/callers office rather than sorting?

An address on my round regularly gets letters postmarked "City of Inverness" and, continuing the geeky theme, the postmark bizarrely looks to be a new die for the 'universal style' cancelling machines used from 1933 but largely replaced over the past twenty years by ink jet machines.

Collections are split on a table at Inverness and 2nd Class is sent to Edinburgh.

There is no modern equipment at Inverness. It's the old Stamp Cancelling Machine in use.
