The London Ambulance Service were called to reports of a man with burns from an unknown package received through the post on Friday (October 10).

Police and the London Fire Brigade confirmed they were called at around 1.30pm to reports of a suspected chemical leak at a business premises in Vinson Close.

Police confirmed one staff member had been taken to hospital. Their condition is not known.

The exact cause of the leak is being investigated

A ROYAL Mail delivery office had to be evacuated as two postmen were treated for suspected chemical burns from a package today.

The Met Police and London Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at around 1.30pm to the report at a business premises in Vinson Close, Orpington.

Reports stated a woman had received burns from a package, but it was two men who were treated at the scene and are now OK.

London Ambulance's hazardous materials team had tweeted: "We are on the way to a female with burns from a unknown package received through the post in Orpington."

However, a Royal Mail spokesman said: "I can confirm that Royal Mail's delivery office in Orpington was evacuated around lunchtime today at the request of the emergency services investigating a possible chemical spillage.

"Two of our staff, both male, were treated by medics on the scene - both are now OK. Mail deliveries were undertaken as usual this morning and mail collections will also be made this evening.

“Staff have now returned to the building and the enquiry office will reopen at 5 pm. We apologise to customers for the temporary closure of the enquiry office earlier today. "

A Met Police spokesman added: "Police were called at 13:33hrs on Friday 10 October to reports of a suspected chemical leak at a business premises in Orpington.

"Officers, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and the London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended the premises in Vincent Close, Orpington.

"One member of staff has been taken to hospital. Their condition is not known.

"The exact cause of the leak is currently under investigation."
