We are making improvements to our parcel prices and formats

This means that consumers and SMEs will be able to put bigger items – or more items – into every Small Parcel they send by Royal Mail. The maximum volume available in a Small Parcel will almost double, offering better value.

The change combines the largest dimensions of the two existing formats for Small Parcels, creating a single, larger Small Parcel format measuring 45cm x 35cm x 16cm.

Christmas price promotion

At the same time, we are introducing a price promotion for consumers and SMEs. It will run from Monday 20 October to Sunday 18 January 2015.

Under the promotion, all stamped Second Class Small Parcels weighing up to 2kg will cost the same at £2.80. Previously, there were separate prices for 0-1kg and 1-2kg parcels. This means a saving of £1 on Second-Class Small Parcels weighing between 1kg and 2kg at Post Offices or through our online postage.

The price promotion will benefit customers sending Christmas presents to friends and relatives, marketplace sellers and smaller businesses selling gifts online over the festive period and during the New Year sales.

Commenting on the changes, Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail parcels said: ‘We are pleased to further simplify our stamped parcels portfolio to provide great value and support consumers and small businesses. To launch the new Small Parcel format we are introducing a festive price promotion that will benefit customers sending Christmas presents to friends and family, marketplace sellers and smaller businesses selling gifts online.’

The parcels changes are part of our ongoing programme to continue to respond to customer needs, provide great value and maintain our leading position in the UK parcels market.

royal mail should do more promotions often imo. and instead of wasting money and adverts which display nothing, they should be advertising stuff like this.

We can't manage the one's we get now,how about a promotion for the delivery staff,get some casuals in to help us.

I'm sure all shareholders are ecstatic that RM are reducing profit margins per parcel at their most profitable time of year, while further reducing profits by creating larger overtime budgets and/or cut-offs.

If some areas are struggling to give OPGs enough work for their contract hours, due to Whistl and Amazon delivering there own mail and parcels, make promotional prices area specific, based on where the parcel is going.

I think we're gonna be up s**t creek without the paddle come Chrimbo, especially if we have to contend with Amazon again. Last Chrimbo was a farce with their packets. York upon York of them waiting to be sorted and delivered last time, and they were sitting in offices for days some times too! Now we've got to contend with the "new sizes" too so you can imagine what a pain this will be...

What/when will the next "resize/reprice" on small packets occur then?

RM might as well merge small and medium parcels as it doesn't tie in with how they're sorted anyway (at least in MCs)

Still a long way to go? So far as I can work out, the only one close to that £2.80 (and delivers to someone's home, not a shop or locker in the area) is Hermes costing £2.98. Does this mean RM is now the cheapest way to send something that size? - and having it delivered to a house btw, not many people round our way have a local shop any more - they are almost as rare as a Post Office out here in the sticks!

I'm having trouble with this one, isn't it a bit like the butcher slashing the price of turkeys and the farmer selling Xmas trees at half price but only for December.

Price of sending a parcel reduced by about a 1/3rd so you've got to shift 50% more to make the same profit, this sites already full of folk saying they haven't got time to do their walk so if RM are planning to "pile it high and sell it cheap" how's that going to work when the first thing Dom says when you say you can't complete is ok leave your parcels.
