ROYAL MAIL COULD BE REPLACED BY 2018

Six months have passed since the privatisation of Britain’s obligatory postal service and it’s already under threat from rival companies as it could potentially lose 42% of addresses by 2017.

The news comes after MPs have launched an inquiry into their ability to deliver to every address around the UK over a 6-day period. Whistl, formally known as the TNT delivery services, have been able to cherry pick their more profitable routes through big cities leaving Royal Mail to deliver to all 29m addresses Monday to Saturday for the same price.

Royal Mail is committed to providing the UK’s postal service until 2021, any change before this would have to be put to a vote in parliament, which could be sooner rather than later should the new inquiry not save them.

This means in the not too distant future Royal Mail, Whistl, the CWU Postal Union and regulator OFFCOM will be called to give evidence in the House of Commons.

Adrian Bailey, Chair of the Business Select Committee, said: “We have a number of representatives from Royal Mail and others warning that Whistl can cherry pick their routes because they don’t have a universal service obligation, if it (Royal Mail) is under threat we will see what we can do to protect it.”

2017 could not only see Royal Mail lose 42% of addresses but two-hundred million in revenue, which could affect the jobs of their workers and their wages should nothing be done about the looming threat of rival companies.

An anonymous Royal Mail worker, who didn’t want to be named for job security reasons, said:

“No one really wanted privatisation, that’s why we went on strike, but it was agreed to in the end by the Union due to the free shares and protected working terms and conditions for 3 years.”

Although he did admit that should they loose revenue their shares value would drop which could cause a problem amongst workers as their redundancies which could come hand in hand with the decline wouldn’t be high and the shares would be what would boosts it up should they wish to sell.

He expressed that ‘on the floor’ everyone s under the influence that nothing is changing and everyone is content and happy although you never know what’s around the corner.

This postman has faith in his company and wasn’t as worried about loosing customers “Competitors provide good competition which means better customer service for the UK, Royal Mail have lost customers before and allot of the time they have come back because competitors can’t handle the work load and everyone knows we can”
