union stance on starting before your start time

I go into work sharp depending on what duty i'm on. If i'm on a duty that is under the time. Like i know i can get finished 30 minutes before i am supposed to . I'll go in 15 -20 mins early and just throw some of my mech in. Just makes it easier for me so i'm not having to rush flat out. It defeats the object really in our office as by the time the first break comes , most the walks are thrown in waiting on the last van without coming in sharp. Some folk have the fear factor that it will be busy so they come in just incase.
Some people like to get finished early on the odd occasion and will come in sharp. That is up to them and the manager.
If the mugs are coming in and doing work for free on a regular basis well that is a different matter. If I'm on a walk that is over the top by an hour then i'll come in spot on time and do the over time or hand back if i need to be away on finishing time.
All depends on the individual and the walk he/she is on.
We have a bloke that dropped from full time to part time but comes in 1hr 30 mins before he should and dosnt book it. That is just mental i think.
If you never have to book overtime anyway on a walk whats the harm in coming in sharp?

The harm is that those who follow you who do start at the correct time, may be subjected to all kinds of ridicule for not being able to finish on time. Why oh why is it important for you to finish earlier than your duty time, especially as you know well that your manager if he is doing his job right can make you work up to your duty time anyway. Start on time,finish on time and work your social life around those times and no one will have any reason to criticise you. If you need the overtime then be prepared to work beyond your designated finish time, and make sure you are getting paid for it.

The manager says nothing and te duty i work on finishes before the finish time anyway. I am happy to do more if manager instructs me to. If i want to come in sharp for any reason that is up to me. I am not claiming overtime and i am not working for free . People want to keep out of other folks business and get on with their own work

What you are inadvertently doing is introducing flexi time into our working environment.
When they introduce flexible working practices, then you can go over unpaid by an hour one day and come in an hour later the next, or you can work 35 hour weeks over the summer (or whatever the p/t equivalent would be) and 43 hour weeks over the Autumn and xmas pressure.
Those are working practices I would hate to see introduced. And until they are introduced you have a start time and a finish time. Neither are optional (apart from the 30 minute flex thing)

I understand what you are saying Clash but isn,t the reality that Royal Mail do not base their lapsing on traffic forecasts, they base it on bums on seats and lets do this on a regular basis even beyond the Summer because there are plenty of fools out there who are prepared to work for nowt.

Obviously none of us can say what happens in each and every office up and down the land, but the rep is supposed to sit down with the DOM every week for a resourcing meeting.
I somehow doubt that the DOM says - I think we can lapse 2 duties next week because half those numpties out there will do it for free.
And the rep agrees (as long as he doesn't have to do any of it)
Reps are supposed to be trained on IWT. And the minutes of those meetings should be freely available.

The lapsing opportunities will be defined by your f/t to p/t ratio, your traffic against model week and your delivery span.
I do all those things mentioned by ganda, I still took out 25 minutes lapsing and finished 15 minutes early. (during the Autumn Pressure)

Might happen in the odd office Dumpsy, but i,m with you. We haven,t had a WTL session in 3 years, so the chance of a weekly resourcing meeting, with a formal statement for what has been agreed and minutes to substantiate, available to all. No, this is Royal Mail we are talking about, and we all know that management fly by the seat of their pants and muddle from one disaster to the next.
