Royal Mail today announced that the latest recommended posting date for International Economy Christmas mail to St Helena and Tristan da Cunha is Monday 29 September 2014.

This is the first deadline for international posting as the Islands are around 5525 miles away from the UK.

September 29 is the recommended date for customers to ensure that cards and parcels sent to the British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic arrive in good time for Christmas. St Helena and Tristan da Cunha do not receive all mail by air, so Christmas post is delivered by ship which makes for a longer journey.

The mail for St Helena is carried on BFPO/RAF flights to Ascension Island and then sent by sea to St Helena. It is carried on the passenger, cruise and delivery ship, RMS St Helena. It is one of the last three sailing vessels in the world still to carry the venerable title of Royal Mail ship, held in the past by so many famous British passenger liners.

The other two ships still allowed to carry the title RMS, are the RMS Scillonian 111 which is a passenger ship to the Scilly Isles and the RMS Segwun, a tourist attraction on the Muskoka Lakes in Ontario, Canada. Both are not involved in mail deliveries.
Christmas post for Tristan De Cunha is sent to South Africa by air and then travels onwards by ship.

Monday 29 September is the latest recommended posting date for International Economy items Africa, Asia, Australia, Caribbean, Central and South America as well as New Zealand.


David Cunnington, Royal Mail’s International Operations Director, said: “Christmas is the time of year when customers in the UK will want to remember relatives and friends in St Helena and Tristan da Cunha. While so much of the world is connected by air travel now, it is easy to forget there are still areas where the mail is required to travel by ship.

“The longer journey time for Christmas mail to St Helena and Tristan da Cunha means Monday 29 September is the last recommended posting date for cards and parcels. As always, we urge customers to post early as Royal Mail starts to build up to its busiest time of the year.

It is also the latest recommended posting date for Christmas for International Economy (formerly known as Surface Mail) services to Africa, Asia, Australia, Caribbean, Central and South America and New Zealand. This service enables customers to send Christmas cards and letters at substantially reduced rates compared to using air services in December.

You see this at HWDC, which handles all packages going abroad. Come the middle of September, there's a slight but noticeable uptick in people sending stuff by surface - cards, gifts, etc. etc. - to Australia and New Zealand.

It's never overwhelming but I like it. You get the taste of Christmas without all the rushing around and pressure.
