As for logging off and removing the battery, I often have to log in at random times, without having logged off. Presumably the PDA reset itself somehow. Also,
sometimes the only way to get the bugger to work again is to pull the battery out.

If I have a tracked that doesn't need a signature, I might well scan it in the van then leave the PDA in the van. When I click 'delivered' or 'safeplace' I might well have driven a few hundred yards, if not more, so the location won't be accurate at all.
They can tell where you were when you scan an item, turning off the coms won't make any difference as to the DOMs knowing where you are
They can actually track you in real time, not just when you scan an item. Only some offices have the necessary software, as it is being trialed. Our office is one and I've seen it running. They see everything. Kind of scary actually. We've been told it cannot be used for disciplinary purposes.

im delivering not them. I wouldnt read comms. I dont have time to piss about. I work as accurately as i can at a good pace for me.But i know i make a few mistakes. I am a man not a machine. They can monitor all they like but they get what they get.I like the customers to get their mail so i will go over as long as they pay. If not i will happily bring it back for someone else.

But if "they can actually track you in real time, not just when you scan an item" that's only a problem for those that take excessive breaks or go off their allotted route.
Not an issue for the likes of myself who, working at a decent pace, can't complete on time as often as not. :Very Happy

Why not leave partner delivering letters, while driver does tracked and specials when you leave the office then log off the PDA ,take battery out and ask a custumer on route to slip.it in microwave for 30secs

Here is the agreement for what they like to call service view. If the DOM/manager are using the data outside of the agreement then the rep should use the I/R process to resolve.

Dear Colleagues,

Postal Digital Assistant PDA – Service View

Further to the update given by Bob Gibson, CWU Assistant Secretary, at CWU’s Annual Conference last week, intensive discussions with Royal Mail have continued in trying to reach an agreed Joint Statement covering the use of PDAs (Service View) in the 20 Delivery Units visited as part of the National Delivery Review.

Those discussions have produced a national Joint Statement which has been endorsed by the Postal Executive today.

Royal Mail has been very keen to introduce this ‘service view’ and we can see that there are positive implications for the business and clearly opportunities to improve the overall service to customers and counter the services being offered by competition, in addition its use and how this could be used to improve first time delivery, improve delivery routes and generally improve the service, such as by offering customers notification of delivery times. However there are also negative implications from our point of view, such as the constant tracking of our members on delivery and the potential for this to be used for disciplinary/capability purposes and also route planning and allocation of time to do the job, whereby Royal Mail would simply refer to the service view as the time required for the delivery route regardless of how it was completed and the Joint Statement covers this element off.

The switching on of the service view in the 20 Delivery Offices will provide us with a useful platform to better understand the delivery operation and deal with the key elements of the IDP going forward and this will be reviewed primarily under the auspices of the Resourcing to Workload Strand but it will also remain under review over the wider programme and the overall steering group.

There are clearly positive aspects to the technology, how we might use PDAs to help us increase first time delivery success, but we need to ensure that it remains focused on the positive and not the negative.

In summary

•This is not about catching people out or using the technology in an inappropriate way for disciplinary or capability purposes.

•As a part of the National Delivery Review we have initially enabled access to the information the PDAs provide in the 20 delivery units jointly visited. This means that we will begin to collect the data produced by the PDAs in those offices on a daily basis and use new software called “Service View” to help us understand what this can tell us, and identify the potential of the PDA technology.

•Identify the correct use of delivery equipment and compliance with methods.

•Identify first time delivery success rate and variability.

•Identify consistency of route taken versus planned route.

•The data collected will be managed through the “Service View” software system and managers and CWU Representatives will be trained to use it.

•Individuals will also be able to view their own individual data if they wish to do so.

•Any jointly identified improvements to delivery routes arising from PDA data will be discussed between the DOM and CWU rep in line with existing national agreements.

Attached to the LTB is the agreed national Joint Statement.

Any enquiries to Bob Gibson’s Office, quoting reference 540/230.05

Due to the fact Royal Mails server is not big enough , Royal Mail can only use the PDA heartbeat with 18 offices which are covered by the Service View Agreement.

Royal Mail are looking to obtain a bigger server where the use of the PDA for walk design , absorption , tracking and new products.

Every PDA sets out an heartbeat every 90 seconds detailing an individuals longitude and latitude , in the 18 offices you can see the route taken by the delivery post person , when they start , where they stop at doors and when they finish. That is accessible for the DOM and DSM and the OPG can request to see this. It cannot be used for disciplinary purposes.

Clearly longer term Royal Mail want this to be rolled out everywhere but obviously the server to hold this information across 15000 offices needs to be huge and at this moment the current server can only hold the information for 18 delivery offices out of the 20 which were included in the National Delivery Trials.

While they may not use it for disciplinary procedures they sure as hell will for lapsing and think more of getting servers than supplying the kit we need to do our job's. Is it not time the top of our union said enough of the bonus culture for the very few at the top and back us all the membership for a fair days work for a fair days pay or was that just a bit of posturing when they needed a vote to seam relevant at the time.

Assuming the individual carries the PDA around with him. I seldom do. Mine stays in the van 90% of the time, I only take it out on the loops when I really need to.

I think you can be conducted for leaving PDA in view in the front, check on this, I think it is ok if you leave it in the back where it is out of sight.
