The Introduction of the single daily delivery did save the business money but also saved full time jobs as 95% of Mail was being delivered on the first delivery and management was reducing full time jobs by amalgamating up to seven second deliveries into one round? You did not get a £1000 for the change you got a £26.28 per week pay rise.
In terms of management bonuses I agree it is disgraceful and seems the normal in big companies to exploit the people at the shop floor whilst rewarding those at the top.
I have been in the job 30 years , 25 of them as a rep and I care about the members and the future of both Royal Mail and the CWU and it is not scaremongering to say that we are in a crisis where we need to get a change to of com stopping unfair competition especially end to end cause if we don't , I have no doubt the USO will not survive in the short to medium term and that will be a game changer.
If others think this is all a con so be it , but as I deal with the impact on a day to day basis and know that TNT take 20% of your Mail within the fist two months and how long can Royal Mail survive if they rollout too the other 42% of UK addresses .

Re: saye v's union subs
Absolutely agree with the sentiment in this post.....What I,ve been thinking too, save money on Union subs pay it into SAYE ,at least I get something back. I,ve always been a union man. First memory I have as a kid is standing outside my dads workplace with a placard when he was on strike for 3 months. Times have changed. The union is an absolute disgrace. My office rep is an absolute disgrace.
It seems people only join the union for their own gain nowadays, not because they believe in justice or equality, or the greater good.
The Labour party ,which the union makes a donation to, is an unelectable joke. No-one out there represents the working man any more. You just got to face facts, no one gives a monkeys about you any more, look after yourself (yourselves). You expect management to @@@@ you over, you DON,T expect to had over by the very people who are supposed to represent your interests. How can they pretend to represent me when they don,t even know what I do ?
When we were on strike , last time there was a Labour government, and they came out and advised us all to go back to work - I will never forget that.......I will never vote Labour again, hang your heads in shame ,absolute disgrace.
What a mess this country is?
God I,ve never seen such wide spread dissatisfaction with the way this country is heading, and yet there is still no alternatives or even any chance of hope it seems.

But Ofcom doesn't regard the competition as unfair.dingo wrote: it is not scaremongering to say that we are in a crisis where we need to get a change to ofcom stopping unfair competition especially end to end cause if we don't , I have no doubt the USO will not survive in the short to medium term and that will be a game changer.
This is exactly what the liberalisation of the postal market was supposed to achieve.
We are now a business but "one price goes anywhere" isn't a sustainable business model.
The USO isn't sustainable in its current form, perhaps not at all.
I agree with you, it is a game changer.
We are possibly/probably going to lose tens of thousands of full-time jobs. It won't be achievable under the current MTSF terms and the CWU won't (economically) survive the fallout.
Crisis? What crisis?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: saye v's union subs
Clash Ofcom primary priority is to protect the USO and only if it is safe to promote competition.
The simply fact there is no safe way to have competition on end to end delivery unless they have to deliver 6 days per week to the 29 million addresses.
By allowing TNT to deliver when they choose and where they choose and without any quality standards means he USO is a treadmill to being financially unsustainable anyone with any knowledge of how the USO is sustained by cross subsidy understands that. That clearly rules out of com.
Royal Mail wants to review MTSF in January as they believe the terms on offer are too generous compared to other industries. Anyone who wants to opt out of paying union subs and use it for SAYE may want to consider if you don't have a job your can't pay SAYE or union subs and for all the criticisms you make of the CWU , remember basic pay in 1994 stood at just 10 thousand pounds per year with the vast majority of postmen and women on a 6 day week. So with an industry which has seen such change and under pressure basic pay has increased , attendances and hours have reduced , paid meal reliefs have continuities meaning individuals if they take them can work around 36 hours per week. You get a christmas bonus , paid holidays up to 6 weeks , all the benefits the union secured in pensions including death in service etc , you get shift allowance and a supplement which includes an early shift payment which hardly anyone now works which increases in pay rounds , we have procedures which stops an hire and fire manage ten would like , we have to agree change I thin the workplace it is not imposed.
We have no compulsory redundancies the union is also now with the assistance of our employment lawyers in talks with the employer over the fact that less than full time staff who work above their hours should have had this paid to them when they take leave over the last few years..
Do you really believe you would keep the above without the CWU ?

Re: saye v's union subs
Dingo, I am not a supporter of the SAYE investment instead of paying union dues, and I do believe that we would be worse off without being supported by all that comes with showing a united front.
However, I take objection to your continuous remarks regarding basic pay. Factually you are probably correct that basic pay has increased since 1994 from 10k to the now approx 20k-21k. What you fail to say is that as basic pay has increased, other pay benefits have either decreased or in most cases are no longer paid at all. So what we have gained in one hand, has been taken away from the other hand. In reality total pay has barely moved in the past 20 years, while at the same time our workload certainly has.
I would also like to know from you why the union is failing to protect full time jobs, and never getting to grips with the bullying and failure to ensure that Royal Mail complies with the processes and time scales laid down in the grievance procedures. All these and many more concerns are the reason why there are members recommending opting out of paying union dues.

They don't do anything about the issues Lincox because they cannot. When you are in bed with management you cannot then fight the cause of the employeesLincox wrote:Dingo, I am not a supporter of the SAYE investment instead of paying union dues, and I do believe that we would be worse off without being supported by all that comes with showing a united front.

effectively. The CWU pay lip service to defending the members but in reality are a second tier of management.

Re: saye v's union subs
To be fair - it used to be a poorly paid job and now it's a well paid job.
But what are we going to do if Ofcom don't budge from their current position?
If we are arguing that the USO is under threat, what do we do when it goes?
Whatever happened to the RM Czar who was going to deal with the 100 worst performing offices?

I wouldn't say its ever been poorly paid though I would say there are fewer opportunities to earn more like there was over 20 years ago.
