Royal Mail would have preferred to have taken 38 000 post boxes out of the system but believe it would result in a bad publicity less than a year since privatisation and would result in a negative impact on the share price.
The 38 000 boxes which they wanted to remove are all recorded by the collection driver as having 50 items or less on the system. Once Ofcom had agreed to the change in access then Royal Mail made it clear that they wanted to move away from collections 38 000 collection boxes from collection drivers and put them onto deliveries. In fact when they presented this to the CWU they even had the walk it would go onto and no walk could have more than 4 pillar boxes to collect from.
As we all know stamp Mail has reduced and therefore some pillar boxes do not get many items in them. Clearly no company under the pressure from both competition and from the pressure of share holders are going to pay either a duty holder or SA when that box could be collected by a delivery OPG whilst on their round. Anyone who was in the business prior to 1992 will recall this is how collections were done in many cases anyway.
This still means that two thirds of collection boxes will be collected by collection drivers or performed on SA.
There will be a big impact on jobs as a result of this change and in earnings and this needs to be resolved via VR or transfer to deliveries ( by bump VRs ) or Mail centres.
Now in terms of the timing for this change , well nothing can move to deliveries until there is an agreement on the collections best practice revision including the impact on people and earnings.
Those are the facts of the situation. If the pillar box has more than 50 items then you can get that box removed during the verification process.
Dingo,
Yes, anyone who was in the business prior to 1992 will recall this is how collections were done in many cases anyway but for those of us not about then were they the ONLY collections from such rural boxes, in which case the final collection time would be no later than lunchtime, or did they supplement later collections done on a collections duty ?
dingo wrote:If you are going over your time or indeed cutting off then you simply cannot take on any of the collections on delivery work. Now clearly there are planning values for clearing a pillar box once outside it and that is one minute and 25 seconds and the most you can have is 4 and that is a total to any delivery of under 6 mins on route.
Personally the more concerning issue at the moment is the HR impact on collection drivers.
If I was you and your were constantly going over I would request that my walk is tested via the CWU rep or area rep unless you want the protracted overtime.
Is this 4 per duty or 4 for a cdv with 2 duties so they can actually empty 8 boxes
Ssshhh, don't report that all minor postboxes in the country are going to have an 8am last guaranteed collection. Can you imagine what the public would say so soon after privatisation when they bascially can't post 1st class anymore without going to the nearest Post Office. There will be 50 letters in each of those boxes every morning that have been sat there for the best part of 24 hours before they are even collected when they should be being delivered.

Where does it say the last collection is 8am?
I don't have any shares so I don't need to be quiet.
If you can find one box with a last collection of 8am I'll report it to the press for you.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
All our boxes have stickers on them 8am Mon-Fri 7am Saturday. That is the earliest it will be collected - it may be collected later (i.e. when the postie gets there)
EDIT: my mistake sorry 9am. Still a bit early for any local business or anyone doing anything other than a strategic plan to the post box.

that is the problem for me, stickers on boxes, without any dialogue what so ever, due to go to delivery this week, but hasn't for whatever reason, so verification process, well not yet, no one has even talked to any collection driver in the office as to what is going on, still we are only a communication company after all
Noticed some bilge stuck to a post box on Tuesday while on a rural. Tried to make head or tail of what it said. Gave up and didn't give a rats ass if I'm honest.
I might have had to empty it, but as no one has told me to do so, I'll just carry on as normal. Fk em!

All our rural vans do a collection of the boxes and post offices on their route and some P&L vans do too and this has gone on for years. In addition smaller collections from boxes are about to be taken out of the scheduled attendance collections dropping them down to single figures.
