not heard a thing yet in fact as a collection driver just had my contract increased by 6 hours this week, we put stickers on 2 weeks since , on duty im on only affected 9 boxes but overall in our place nearly half of boxes were stickered, we have been told starting planning in november to be implemented in february, no idea what happens to us then, our departing lino tells us wakefield starts in september one of the first.

For the record Royal Mail have agreed the change to the collections specification with Ofcom . Royal Mail would have preferred to have taken 38 000 post boxes out of the system but believe it would result in a bad publicity less than a year since privatisation and would result in a negative impact on the share price.

The 38 000 boxes which they wanted to remove are all recorded by the collection driver as having 50 items or less on the system. Once Ofcom had agreed to the change in access then Royal Mail made it clear that they wanted to move away from collections 38 000 collection boxes from collection drivers and put them onto deliveries. In fact when they presented this to the CWU they even had the walk it would go onto and no walk could have more than 4 pillar boxes to collect from.

As we all know stamp Mail has reduced and therefore some pillar boxes do not get many items in them. Clearly no company under the pressure from both competition and from the pressure of share holders are going to pay either a duty holder or SA when that box could be collected by a delivery OPG whilst on their round. Anyone who was in the business prior to 1992 will recall this is how collections were done in many cases anyway.

This still means that two thirds of collection boxes will be collected by collection drivers or performed on SA.

There will be a big impact on jobs as a result of this change and in earnings and this needs to be resolved via VR or transfer to deliveries ( by bump VRs ) or Mail centres.

Now in terms of the timing for this change , well nothing can move to deliveries until there is an agreement on the collections best practice revision including the impact on people and earnings.

Those are the facts of the situation. If the pillar box has more than 50 items then you can get that box removed during the verification process.

Thanks for that Dingo. As unpopular as it is this was bound to happen one day. Having two vans parked in the same street was always going to be looked at from a cost saving point of view. I honestly think that collection drivers will become an endangered species, mainly collecting from bulk business posters and late PO collections.

now thats all great, but can you now tell me where the majority of us who go over or cut off most days will have the time to empty several boxes on already to big of rounds then deal with the bagged up mail when we get back to our office? :Sick

If you are going over your time or indeed cutting off then you simply cannot take on any of the collections on delivery work. Now clearly there are planning values for clearing a pillar box once outside it and that is one minute and 25 seconds and the most you can have is 4 and that is a total to any delivery of under 6 mins on route.

Personally the more concerning issue at the moment is the HR impact on collection drivers.

If I was you and your were constantly going over I would request that my walk is tested via the CWU rep or area rep unless you want the protracted overtime.

you say 6 minutes like its nothing, so when you bring these 4 boxes back to the D.O what do you do with the mail & how long does that take?
Now if someone is squeeking the delivery ontime now, put an extra 15 minutes on their day & their over! Now how about if this person has got children to collect or does not want any overtime? What happens then? Ill tell you what, more agro & pressure on delivery staff yet again!
How the cwu can keep agreeing to more being put on us is beyond me & most members! I suppose we will hear the old favorite- the mail is dropping off, you all have loads of time to lapse, empty boxes, & god knows what else in the future!

Look I never said the plan was wise or good, it is something which of com have agreed with Royal Mail.

There are 3 methods of what happens to the mail which have been collected one is that they post it into a later collection box ( a sham but that is one of the proposals ) 2. They post it into the pillar box outside the office where there is one and 3 where the number of collections done by a delivery office is large provide a service to that office.

The CWU are dealing with the impact from the plan. Do you really expect any union to be able to demand that SA or a full duty should pick up from a collection box which has 20 items in the whole day ? Every business downsizes their operations if their is not a demand for it thats why local banks close etc. The CWU did not want to agree it but what was the alternative ? Call a national strike ?

Instead we have agreed safeguards and no pillar box will be done by a delivery post person until the Area Distribution Rep has agreed the Collections revision including resolving any peoples impact.

Will the overrunning duties procedure be amended as well.

If we don't want/can't work over it need to be written into the agreement what happens if the Cut Off section includes a collection from a post Box.

(And we all know whats going to happen to the keys, exactly the same as happened with Pouch Box keys on overtime, they got lost)

We have just been through a second revision and one of the issues is the backshift 4 day weeks, their deliveries are big and some cannot get a break before going out on collections, so what we had in WTL this morn was there are issues with these duties! and they are not working, I have a sneaky feeling they are going to be told their deliveries are to get bigger as some of their collection boxes will be taken off so yet again changes being made after we have signed for duties and now mine does not look anything like it was when I signed for it :evil/mad

what a right mess it all really is! In this post you say it yourself, the cwu just does not know what to do! If it cannot call a strike its lost in any details of how the job works in the real world as our leaders in the cwu dont ever do the job! And that right there is the problem in a nutshell! Do a crappy delivery for a month & deal with managers when you tell them you are gonna book overtime or cut-off & lets see how you feel about the prospect of having a possible 4 boxes too empty & bag it off when you get back!
As a rep myself i find it harder & harder to explain how the cwu works, most members just say the cwu doesnt give a flying f**k about us aslong as plenty of sub's are rolling in & higher up reps have got full release, i used to defend the cwu from these type of comments now i just nod along.
