The only trouble with later starts in the winter is the dark I wouldn't fancy doing my walk a lot of back to back poor

We questioned this, on my deliver I deliver to rows of terraced houses but all their letter boxes are on the back doors, no street lights down the backs of the houses and the yards are either up or down some old stone steps. We've asked for torches but nobody can source any

When we moved to SDD there was wailing and gnashing of teeth - small businesses will all go bust if they don't get their cheques ( ) before midday and postmen will leave in their droves if they miss Bargain hunt.
But the sky didn't fall in and everyone survived.
And if we move to yet later starts, the sky won't fall in and everyone will adapt.
Obviously there will have to be some more wailing and gnashing of teeth, as there always is.......

Some yes, but start a poll on later hours and I predict that those if favour will be in a minority.

Correct clash, this business has changed and so should we. In fact our leaders should be leading the charge and offering these changes for a decent increase in wages, not just letting royal mail impose them for nothing. It is not PC to suggest it but the Monday to Friday week is coming, everyone knows our senior people will jump at the chance to get out with a decent settlement. The USO should be put on the table with 08.00 starts and let the membership have a say on it, their would not be a massive push back from Royal Mail for this, they would probably welcome it. Our senior members would leave with a decent package and our remaining members would have a reasonable job. It is not our worry about people getting mail on a Saturday or what time they get it during the week' at the end of the day we are only workers to.

You've more confidence than me in the CWU if you expect "a decent increase in wages", "a decent settlement" and "a decent package". That's pie in the sky.
And it's hardly as if "the Monday to Friday week is coming" when Sunday working is being trialled, apart from which if we dropped from a six to a five day week surely it would be Monday not Saturday that RM would want scrapped.

Think of the carbon footprint. At present vans leave after rush hour and get back before the afternoon one. Now we will have idling engines and jams at the time of the school rat-run or even worse the teatime rush. Allowing for traffic you'll have even less time for delivery. More diesel for RM to pay for. Then assuming you actually miss the teatime rush and finish at 4-4:30 you'll get stuck in it going home.

Many people who could be in for packets will be out 3:00 onwards.

Yes, and sunset 3.50pm around the winter solstice. No way should we be working past that at the busiest time of year.

Of course they can source them.

Coincidentally I saw my first RM torch today, as I was on a fitting and looked in the cubby hole for some kill-off stickers. It's a flat red thing that's about a bright as a DOM, in fact worse than one of those old Ever Ready bike lights. It appears to be a clip-on job. Or it could actually be an old bike light. I don't know.
Less chance of seeing dogs in the dark too. As well as more risk of robbery. What about those doing docket? At present they can do a couple of hours and still be home at tea-time. How would they like doing it later, during rush-hour when it would take longer and miss/delay dinner?

Tues -Sat delivery, 8.00-4.00. You seen it here first, might take a wee bit of time but that is what RM are wanting, oh and the USO can do one too cos it will cost too much and if Scotland get independence more money will be needed to keep them afloat as little revenue is generated up there
