Loose masonry falls 100 feet to the ground from former PO

A city centre street was brought to a standstill after loose masonry fell 100 feet to the pavement below from the top of a prominent building in Dundee.

Constitution Street was cordoned off by the emergency services on Saturday evening while firefighters examined the structural damage on the former Post Office building at the junction with Ward Road.

The street remained closed for almost an hour while firefighters worked to secure the remaining structure on the roof of the five-storey building, which also formerly housed Yuppies Bar and London Nightclub.

Firefighters used an aerial platform to examine the area and removed some small items of stone work from the balcony area. Two appliances were initially in attendance.

No one was injured by the fall of the heavy stonework, which smashed on impact when reaching the pavement.

However, passers-by brought the potentially lethal incident to the attention of the police.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Just before six we were called out to Constitution Street.

“There were four officers who immediately closed off the road. Nobody was injured and the road was open before seven.

Officers stayed to make sure everything was secure until around half past seven.”

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Service added: “Our units were despatched to the scene, with the initial report that a statue had been smashed and had caused damage.

“After it was discovered that it was masonry, we proceeded to make sure the structure was secure and in just over thirty minutes we were able to make the scene safe again.”
