I take it then, for part timers it would mean a 10:30am start? Say an hour doing whatever prep / packets which don't get done for you coming in, so out on delivery from 11:30! And then if you have lapsing to do, you won't finish till well after 5pm!

You finish at 4pm (or whatever your finishing time is). Lapsing should only be done IF it can be done withing the contracted hours.

Lounge lizard, be realistic it is the only plus we have In royal mail that we are not on the minimum wage. In this climate we are not so badly of for an unskilled workforce. An improvement in our starting time can only be regarded as a bonus.

Yes, but we differ on what is "an improvement in our starting time".
I and most of my colleagues would rather go back to an earlier, not later, starting time. Plenty of time then for etc. before bed.

I find some of these attitudes amazing' surely we should be trying to have more normal hours. What is wrong with a 8pm start, it puts us in line with most jobs at present. You cannot really expect Royal mail to run a business to suit the school run. If it does not suit then just leave, I have been working start times at 05.00 so 08.00 starts gives me some sort of normal life. The sooner this happens the better and the dinosaurs can move on If they wish. I look forward to a normal family enjoyment time.

Sorry, that is completely farcical. RM has NEVER worked 'normal hours' due to the nature of the business and the logistics.
As for 'if it doesn't suit just leave' well, brilliantly arrogant tosh! The fact is many took the job because of childcare considerations and are in place at RM BEFORE any changes are made to the hours.
In fact, going by your logic surely YOU should get another job as the present starts are clearly too early for you.....makes us wonder why you took the job in the first place.
And of course, let's hear the positive feedback come flooding in from households and business when their mail is even later than it is now.

Tell this to the millions of other workers who work normal 9 to 5 hours. how do they plan their school runs and every day lives. This a great opportunity to have a normal existence like most working class people. I think any opposition to this is from people who want to live in the past,when I took the job in the first place we worked 6 days a week. When the push came for a 5 day week we had similar dinosaurs saying NO it would mean working an hour a day extra, do you really care if businesses and households get their mail later? You are not a servant or a slave you deserve a life to. get of your knees,

You're the dinosaur if you can't accept that SOME of us, for whatever reason, want to work earlier in the day than you do.
Whether or not you struggle to get out of bed early enough in the morning the rest of us who actually welcome Royal Mail's traditional hours, and might have taken the job because of them, do have "a normal existence", don't "want to live in the past" simply because we won't accept without question every initiative RM throws our way and are no more "a servant or a slave" than you.
And pray tell us, in the 'life' you 'deserve' what would you do with your extra hour or two in the morning if we worked a "normal 9 to 5 hours" ( and don't just say 'breakfast' ) ?

Maybe we should work Boxing Day and New Year's Day too, like the 'normal' people who work in the retail industry? My mate works 6-2 in a factory, isn't that normal either then?

How about we don't bother with a paid meal relief either and work 8.5 or 9hrs a day like many people?

I think you need to open your eyes and realise that not everyone works 9-5, and this job has never attracted the kind of people who are interested in working later hours.

I can see RM bringing it in eventually, they'd save money on not having so many staff in on nights in MCs and DOs, they could also have all sequencing done in one wave and it would give scope to have DO staff do final collections (probably for P&L they return to the office, non-driver books d/ls, etc in whilst the driver does collections)

1. RM will put this under the 'Way Forward' Agreement umbrella
2. Union will tell everyone it has to be done to secure jobs. (Although a % of jobs are removed from the business due to less processing/transportation waves, through MC divisions) > Remember, "Nothings Agreed till it's all Agreed"
3. Becomes normal working practice.

4. Early starters will still come in early, RM laughing as many more free hours obtained.
5. Sunday delivery becomes standard across the business - DO OT to be had this way.

Just seen this thread, I've been a 8am - 4pm for about 6 years now (sub-office) and when it gets to half 2 it feels late haha. 15 years ago it was a 6am start then they moved it to 7:!5 and to the current set-up

They have slightly adjusted our times in the last few weeks though, 7:40 start but the mail doesn't turn up until 8am and the 20 minutes are for D2D prep (crap when no D2Ds or just 1 lot) and easy (yeah, right)Tuesdays is a 8am til 14:40 and 3pm on a Saturday

Yes, I know of an SPDO that never starts before 9am, but times like this should remain the exception, not the norm.

Because nearly all those I know delivering the mail don't want to work later and because probably all those receiving it don't want to receive it later.

When we moved to SDD there was wailing and gnashing of teeth - small businesses will all go bust if they don't get their cheques ( ) before midday and postmen will leave in their droves if they miss Bargain hunt.
But the sky didn't fall in and everyone survived.
And if we move to yet later starts, the sky won't fall in and everyone will adapt.
Obviously there will have to be some more wailing and gnashing of teeth, as there always is.......

Some might actually enjoy it .........
