I take it then, for part timers it would mean a 10:30am start? Say an hour doing whatever prep / packets which don't get done for you coming in, so out on delivery from 11:30! And then if you have lapsing to do, you won't finish till well after 5pm!

Higher likelihood of parents of young kids not being in, because they are collecting kids from school mid afternoon.

At the weekend, more people will be out making use of their day off, not waiting for their parcel(s).

Less people around for DTN.

Longer travelling times for OPGs to/from work.

OPGs that will have "family friendly" because they have their own kids to pick up.

More delivery time in the dark during Xmas pressure, as it gets colder.

i dont think it ever goes dark before 4pm in december unless in north of scotland

Its dark ~3pm around Xmas week (shortest day is ~21st Dec) in parts of England.

This would kill the job for me. Im on a 30hr contract today its 08:38 to 14:38, traffic is a joke in the morning as it is with the school runs. I worked till 4pm the other day making up my hours and it took me 50mins to get home instead of the 20-25 its normally takes. Also it was clear to see on the 4 loops me and my partner did as OT, started about 2:30pm we brought back a higher % of parcles as people were just not in, the mums were out getting the kids, etc. How are we meant to delivery 1st time when u are asking people to stay in all day just to get a parcel. When im waiting for a parcel im happy to stay in till 12/1ish as I know its coming but to be waiting till 3pm is a joke.

Fish is correct , Royal Mail"s key strategy for the future is to move to one pass meaning that you will not get a wave 1 sequencing mail but all 100% later than your current wave 2 arrival. Considering that mech mail makes up approx 70% of your overall mail then they believe that no one would need to start before your mail arrives.

Clearly this is a game changer and would remove all improved duty structures , stop any extra hours a part timer may be working and reduce the ratio of full time jobs on a huge scale. The CWU have informed Royal Mail that the CWU will not support the roll out of one pass as it will make the job security agreement null and void. National talks are continuing.

Its 7 whilst 2.30pm in our office (or 2.48pm counting the break at the end). I feel that these times works very well. Part-timers are supposed to come in at 9.15 but nearly everyone of them comes in an hour early - to hopefully finish early.

That would tell me something about what posties want though as most staff complained when we moved to later starts. We knew it was all part of 'modernisation'. Staff had the usual issues of childcare, dropping the kids off at school or picking them up before 3pm etc. and Royal Mail tried to show that they were flexible in all of this by taking their views into account.

Im aware that senior managers think that it makes no difference what time we deliver the post; after all they probably believe that if a customer truly wants their mail early then they should PAY for it. But I feel it has a wider impact on the community, especially as people have always regarded the postman/postwoman to be a early morning job and not a late evening one. What difference does that make I hear you ask?? Answer: Our reputation. Why would Royal Mail spend so much advertising last year otherwise? And what managers don't realise is that staff going out later actually puts MORE pressure on posties to get mail like special deliveries done; as they have to fit it around the increasing workload of large packets, parcels, tracked AND letters! The average delivery span of a postal worker when I started was around two and a half hours of high-octane energy expenditure. We would get up early and have the mail through your door by breakfast and we had time to spare to be happy and talk to customers. In the last decade the company has lost 50,000 jobs. So with things changing and a delivery span of four and a half hours, some common sense needs to be applied if Royal Mail keep pushing for later starts.
