Sunday parcel service at Derby sorting office gets public's stamp of approval

DERBY'S collection point for post has started opening on Sundays, with the move already proving a major success.

The Midland Road site opened on a Sunday, for the first time outside the Christmas period, yesterday.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "We had 174 customers, making it very busy and meaning we had many more than we were expecting."

She said the move had been to "provide flexible opening hours for customers." .

Alternatively, customers can request their parcel be redelivered free of charge.

They can also ask for the parcel to be placed in a nominated "safe place" or with a neighbour.

The new Midland Road Sunday opening hours, from noon to 4pm, are expected to improve the situation with post and parcel collections over Christmas.

Previously, the spokeswoman said that it would only have been open "a couple of times" on a Sunday over the festive period.

She said that the "new trial will also run right through the busy Christmas period" and end some time next year.

Last Christmas, Royal Mail came under fire for the size of the queues at the collection point.

Telegraph facilities co-ordinator John Forde said he went to the sorting office as usual at 8.30am on Monday, December 16, only to find big queues. The usual sack of mail was not ready.

He went back three times and, each time, there was no sign of it.

Mr Forde said: "People were queuing out of the door and the traffic wardens were going around ticketing cars parked outside.

"No-one is going to buy a ticket when they think they'll only be there for five minutes."

On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, the collection point is open from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Wednesdays, 8.30am to 8pm, and Saturdays, 7.30am to 2pm.
