Some members are working more than 39 hours during the quiet summer perioddingo wrote:It is welcome that the volumes of Mail have kicked back in and are higher then Royal Mail anticipated hence the number of Mail centres who either failed or diverted Mail.
The problem however is that seasonal fluxations in volumes are driving the push for annualised hours to be introduced as standard 39 hours across 52 weeks per year do not reflect the peaks and troughs of Mail and as we all know Royal Mail are driving torwards resourcing only to workload and not to the duties within the office.

Annualised hours can take many forms dingo but it's difficult to see how a business that calls itself family friendly and is seeking to attract more women into the workplace can justify a move like that.dingo wrote:The problem however is that seasonal fluxations in volumes are driving the push for annualised hours to be introduced.
Let's hope that a union made up of mostly middle aged men doesn't forget that working longer hours during the winter will cause many members problems with childcare and retrieving children from school not to mention the added fatigue during our busiest, coldest, darkest months.
A fair but firm no thank you is required, we've seen our hours jiggled about enough in the last 5 years allegedly to improve efficiency and better align hours to workload.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Annualised hours?
Working longer November to January and less June to August?
If the CWU even entertains this without a major consultation of members, there will be a riot.
Some depots may have ended up with Delivery Methods revisions where OPGs are finishing early in the summer, others may be affected by TNT delivering their DSA items, while others make also have Amazon trying to deliver their own.
But some of us were dealt laughable Delivery Methods expectations, where completing an expected full working day "properly" can take anywhere from ~30-180mins of overtime for ~45 weeks of the year. It is only during the kids' summer break we have a chance of finishing on time, but even then it is not guaranteed.
Managers want and expect lapsing in the summer, but real world Delivery To Neighbour time should have been challenged by the CWU (rather than the pathetic "it takes no more time" official trial report) and ensured that OPGs got the summer holidays to spend ~15mins or so a day trying to knock on neighbours' doors, to make them realise what is coming this winter. Realistically DTN is going to mean splitting most walks in half to complete on time during Xmas pressure, but because this has not been officially challenged by the CWU, RM will be bullying members into last year's "assistance levels" which will be a country mile out.

Apparently down 'yer in deepest Westcountry we're not lapsing but still absorbing 7 walks as last count - (I know there's a difference by can't remember what). Anyways 2 hrs over today thanks to a loop of absorption (which is of course three miles off the normal start point
).
Yesterday was even better. Got in after long weekend to find a frame full of mail. Good-oh, thinks I, someones knocked it in already.
"Not so so": says Lino, looking somewhat shifty (don't they all). "It didn't go out on Monday. Would you mind.............." . Wilful delay charge for the DIM? Nah, thought not.

Yeah, but if they offer the money and I'M in the mood I'll take it. I'm just mercenary. Likewise if not in the mood I say 'stuff it' or words to that effect.....and bring it back.ust remember youre not obliged to do the OT :)

Royal Mail want annualised hours and the resourcing to workload strand are reviewing seasonal and annualised hours.Postie45 wrote:has annualised hours been mentioned other than as a casual thought by someone on this thread ?
Royal Mail have informed the CWU they wish to move to one pass which will have massive conseqences on jobs as if they do introduce this then no Mail will be in an office till well after 8. This is why we need to look at how you can protect jobs in the future.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: Why so busy today?
And not long after "one pass" RM will be pushing for OPGs to work 5 shifts over 7 days, where mail arriving at the depot the day before is prepped after delivery, ready for the following day. So Saturdays become delivery only (as a "carrot" to finish earlier and do more "normal" Saturday stuff like go to football matches again) and Sundays become prep only.

Re: Why so busy today?
So would that mean, get in band up, then go out, on return prep for next day?

Re: Why so busy today?
That is what I'm suggesting, yes.
More chance of catching people at home for attendance parcels by delivering earlier, less chance of having to deliver in the dark.
But with the "perk" of an early Saturday finish, balanced by OPGs coming in on a Sunday to prep the mail that arrived Saturday morning, ready for delivery on Monday.

I will do some 'change', but know full well it is no guarantee against redundancy. You just hope it won't happen.

Maybe the union should employ a `you shall not pass` stance rather than the compliance that it will no doubt turn into.
Expect a `joint` statement soon exulting us all with how good this bolloxs is.
