Royal Mail launch investigation after postman suffers knee injury in Mynyddygarreg

ROYAL Mail has launched an investigation after a postman fell and suffered a knee injury in Mynyddygarreg.

As part of the Safer Routes in the Community Scheme, the new pedestrian walkway, complete with a ramp for the disabled, was built on Heol Gwelfor to link to Mynyddygarreg Primary School.

But postman Robert Oag fell on the steps and had to be treated at Glangwili Hospital.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail has conducted an internal investigation and we can confirm that our postman — Robert Oag suffered a knee injury on August 8 when he tripped and fell in an area of slippery stairs in Heol Gwelfol Road in Mynyddygarreg.

"We are pleased that our colleague is now recovering at home after being discharged from Glangwili General Hospital.

"Royal Mail takes the safety of its people seriously and conducts regular road safety briefings for drivers."

Village residents are now demanding the council fix a "dangerous" pedestrian access.

Vivian Summers said he had counted "27 faults" in the construction.

He said: "The standard of work is shocking and I can only wonder if the completed job has ever been inspected by management."

Fellow resident Geoff Walters, 73, said he had lived there for 46 years without there being an accident but since the project he claimed that the postman and another woman had fallen on the steps.

"They haven't finished the job," said Geoff, who is registered as disabled.

"The postman had nothing to get hold of when he fell.

"In my opinion the steps are too small.

"I worked with building firms and we always made sure we did the job properly."

County executive board member for technical services and transport councillor Colin Evans said: "I have asked officers to look to see what has happened here.

"All the works for this very important scheme that was brought about by the community enthusiasm for the improvements would have been signed off when the scheme was delivered before the end of March."
