An MP has thrown his weight behind Wansford residents’ fight to keep their popular postie.

North West Cambridgeshire MP Shailesh Vara has called on Royal Mail to “reconsider its decision” to relocate Martha Powell.

Royal Mail wants to move Ms Powell from Wansford, where she has been post woman for 14 years, to Wittering, with just 20 months left to her retirement. A petition, calling on the company not to transfer Martha now has 527 signatures.

Mr Vara has written to Ms Moya Greene, chief executive of Royal Mail. He said: “It is clear that Martha Powell is very well valued and after 14 years of loyal service to Wansford and its residents she is well known.

“Postal workers like Martha do more than just deliveries. They often look in on vulnerable residents and their local knowledge can assist in the prevention of crime by spotting suspicious behaviour. This petition shows a groundswell of public opinion in favour of retaining Martha and I hope Royal Mail will reconsider its decision.”

Residents plan to present their petition to Darren Stanton, collection and delivery sector manager at Royal Mail’s Peterborough Mail Centre, in Papyrus Road on Friday.

Elin Styles, campaigner and resident said: “We feel really disappointed. Royal Mail has not given us a valid reason why, with little more than 18 months to go to her retirement, Martha is being moved.

“We feel it’s unjust and unreasonable to move her from an area that she has looked after brilliantly for 14 years.”

He is backing the campaign to get votes that's my guess. He also voted for the Privatisation of Royal Mail so will he be contacting Tesco if the villagers don't like a new delivery driver.

I know Martha & she doesn't want all this fuss & attention. The problem with Wansford is that it's a village thats stuck in a time warp.
Of course they don't want her to go, they got the good life with what she does for them. A new postie will no doubt do things by the book. Give people an inch & they will expect a mile.

More than 500 sign petition to keep Wansford postie

Villagers in Wansford near Peterborough have issued a strong protest to Royal Mail chiefs to keep their postie.

Protesters from Wansford handed over a petition signed by 500 plus people to a senior Post Office official.

The petition was presented by villagers when they arrived at the Peterborough Mail Centre, in Papyrus Road, Werrington .

They are angry because the Royal Mail wants to move Martha Powell from Wansford, where she has been post woman for 14 years.

They want to move her to Wittering, even though there are only 20 months left to her retirement.

And North West Cambridgeshire MP Shailesh Vara has also stepped into the battle.

He said: “It is clear that Martha Powell is very well valued and after 14 years of loyal service to Wansford and its residents she is well known.

“This petition shows a groundswell of public opinion in favour of retaining Martha and I hope Royal Mail will reconsider its decision.”

Royal Mail spokesperson, Morag Turnbull said: “We are pleased our customers in Wansford have had such excellent service from one of our postwomen.

“We need to continually review our operation in the light of falling mail volumes and a change in what we deliver – fewer letters and more parcels.

“As such, some customers may notice that a different postman or woman will deliver their mail. When changes to our operation become necessary, we allocate routes based on seniority.

“This is agreed between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union.”
