There are hopes that postal workers in East London and Liverpool who took unofficial industrial action will return to work.

Staff in more than 20 delivery offices in several parts of the UK, including Glasgow, Liverpool and parts of London, took unofficial action in protest at changes to their hours.

Some protested that they arrived for a shift starting at 5am but were told that the Royal Mail had implemented changes to shifts so they could not start until 6am.

Up to 130,000 union members had been due to return to work, but the action broke out at the start of the morning shift.

Postal workers were still taking unofficial action in some parts of London and Liverpool after returning to work in Glasgow.

Overall, there was action in around 24 of the 1,400 delivery offices nationwide.

"The overwhelming majority of our people are now back at work clearing a backlog of mail which is equivalent to less than a day's normal postbag," said a Royal Mail spokesman.

The company said it had given notice over a period of months of changes to the start times of some workers because of new legislation which will restrict the speed of mail vehicles.

The unofficial action came as the Prime Minister was criticised by a senior union leader after intervening in the bitter postal workers' strike by saying there was "no justification" for the dispute continuing.

Gordon Brown told MPs that postal staff should go back to work, as the Government took a hard line against the Communication Workers Union in its long running dispute over pay, jobs and pensions.

It's also funny when they try to say "40 out of thousands of offices " and don't mention where they are.

Just came off the picket line. As far as i know the strike is spreading in london.
More of East london's offices have come out and now a large number of offices
in SW, SE, and North london have joined us. I have also heard that Greenford
Bristol and Leicester mailcentres have come out.

I think management need to show some figures off how this affects everyone, the majority of vehicles that leave my place of work are LGV's or 17t. The only 600's are the odd sweeper. From what I remember the last vehicle that we wait for hasn't changed much either (will check this out later).

East London was all out except four offices as far as I could tell (E4, E11, E17 and E18). E11 weren't given any info and I heard the E4 rep walked out alone/was suspended.

For us, the decision to leave was only taken today, after being thrown about and rejected yesterday, as work arrived from over the ELMC picket line after we cleared our office backlog yesterday.

7/31 walked and I was in trouble (with talk of suspension) after getting people together to inform them of the situation. I planned to let them know the situation and their Union's standing and everyone was to decide for themselves but our DOM was round there kicking up a fuss as I wasn't an official rep.

We were out fairly quickly and there were some shocks at some people who stayed behind who didn't want to walk on unofficial action.

I'm sure if the unofficial action is a good idea but what else do you do once tainted work is sitting on your frame?

I'm feeling a little queasy at the prospect of my job hanging in the balance.

it's a dreadful comic that Liverpool Echo, I'm sure IWW won't be too enamored with The Daily Post either. Most of the local rags are owned by some media group or other. The Lancashire Evening Post is famous for it's spelling & grammar mistakes and articles that seem to have been written by a 12yr old .Regional Independent Media is famous for it's "The Rugby Lugger" as it's "affectionally" known in the game .

I stopped getting the Evening Post! I spent more time scouring the pages for print, spelling and grammar errors than I did reading the damn thing.
