I think you missed a punctuation before the f****** slavery... lol :d'oh!

RM never seizes to amaze me! Portering is supposed to help reduce movement for preppers so that they can concentrate on their job. It is also a health and safety measure - especially with packets. It also makes things more efficient all round because you don't have too many bodies around the IPS and Packets frame - some just talking and doing very little, others being distracted by those that come to collect every 5 minutes and so on.

However, in some offices, it has now been turned into some kind of job for the most junior with lots more work now packed on the Porters; in addition, some posties having a go at porters as they are real 'porters' as you have in hotels and so on. Even those kind of porters should be treated with respect and not as f****** slaves :evil/mad

itll likely start off a total disaster, then over the next few days problems will get ironed out. Eventually itll ease into a "working" system, but itll just take much longer than it used to.

Portering ,saves no time at all. Just give a shout out after an allocated timespan ,everyone to clear there mail. It's a waste of bodies really . The porters job isn't the best hiding to nothing .

Yup I have no doubt of that.

So to sum up.... I guess the general consensus is that it's a load of shite that barely works in a few offices and fails miserably in most others. All the jobs are bad and being a porter is the worst but not to worry as they never have porters for long.

Problem is it's being brought in by a new DOM and he's brought all his little line manager cronies from another office to try and make it work. Despite previous DOMs confirming that they wouldn't even try to bring it in our office because they knew it wouldn't work. This guy is out to prove something and I doubt he'll back down without a fight. I just feel sorry for the customers as ultimately they are the ones that will suffer through all this.

Oh well, couple of weeks til it's introduce then I guess mass cutoffs all round. Won't be the first time, doubt it will be the last but looking on the bright side at least I'll have more company when I cut off now! :nana

Porters and trolleys belong on railway station platforms or at Billingsgate fish market .. not in a sorting and delivery office where they get in the way, use up manpower that could be better deployed and fill sorting frames with so much mail that when the prepper arrives the frame is unworkable !!!

Why would you want someone on the sorting who doesn't know it?
Would you want to deliver a duty prepped by someone who doesn't know the frame.

IWM, at its simplest, is putting the right resources in the right place at the right time.
How else do you want to work?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

If you don't sit at the sorting frame - you don't learn it.
By the time you have entered all the sequenced mail on a strange frame there is a passable recognition of where things are from the hand sorted items.
We don't last forever Clash - I was the last of six experienced staff to leave my office over the last few weeks - sorters are now very thin on the ground and when four of the remainder are on leave and jury service in the first two weeks of September we will see how the indoor work load is managed - there certainly won't be any porters on duty!

It seems to me that managers always fall for the pressure from IPS/Packet sorters - they are really paid more than 1 hour to do additional duties as Ft staff but most do not want to spend that time on the IPS/Packets. Hence they complain about any scheme that might extend their stay on the IPS.

Posties really should just do their job abd leave the managing to the managers...

Portering might not work in all offices - obviously. The biggers the office and the more double preppers you have portering might be a great help on very busy days - it just makes people more productive and reduces traffic around the IPS/Packet frames.

Some managers are just so blind-sided or too scared to delegate that they allow their offices to be inefficient and let unfairness rein.

Today, by the time the manager called people to the IPS, there was obviously less sorting to do as enough work had been done by the firms, rurals and early starters... But instead of re-allocating more staff to the packets and some to go and help the double-preppers; things were left the way they were. So IPS finished early and everyone went to join those sorting on packets - thereby having too many bodies on packets. Packet bags being filled to the brim very quickly; some falling into other bags, some became very overweight, some took bags and left no bags, sorters getting in each others way, and some just chucking things anywhere...

The result, the missort rate was really very high and managers got the hump when some left early with missort packets and letters not redistributed. And so he kept threatening, as usual, to start using a Yellow Card system for all-round office clear frames.

* Why do people have to dump letters and packets all over someone table when they could easily put them in a box and leave them on the floor or stacked. Secondly, why don't we ever have enough bags on the packets frames so that people can easily swap bags before they are full. Some of these things take someone to use initiative and go and get the bags; the same as collecting when frames are full or packet bags full. Really simple! Then we would not need official portering.

* How do they manage in the mail centres especially on busy days and Xmas?

Apart from selections that are going by air, all parcels go into sleeves
