As long as you sign all the due paperwork, Royal Mail insurance will cover you.
What paperwork, you mean the logbook?
No, your DOM will provide a form for you to fill in (can't remember the no. now), stating where the van will be parked, how far from the DO you live, not to be used for personal use etc. etc.
The DOM is also supposed to do a site visit too, but this rarely happens

enskied wrote:It is illegal to use your private car on duty, you are completely uninsured. Even separate individual business insurance is exempt for Royal Mail staff. Once you arrive at your office you must use a company vehicle. You may not even travel to your first/last delivery point without mail. DOM's may travel between offices and to meetings in their own car, but should use a company van for doing obs or delivering mail.
It is not illegal, if you have complied with the relevant rules then royal mails bond will cover you, ie correct paper work done and in an office that has not yet underwent a revision

to travel to your first or last delivery point without mail then all that is needed is personal business insurance to cover you

Managers can use there cars for doing observations and delivering mail again as long as they comply with the correct rm rules

For the last few days in our delivery office in
one guy has been using his car on a trolley job
The DOM has given him permission to use it, our union rep has gone mad at her,
she told him she has had permission from the DSM for the guy to use it, because he was doing the walk on overtime.

Are there any exceptions ?

If not who can our rep report it to?

would an email to Moira help?

None that I am aware of because the bond has been removed/

Quelle surprise that RM and the managers totally ignore any agreement then couple that with the arseholes that are prepared to cock a snoot at the union and their comrades and any guise of solidarity and you end up with the organisation we have.

This thread got me thinking about Hermes/Yodel couriers who use their own cars for deliveries. How likely are they to have the necessary insurance?

From Hermes own site
Insurance

Motor insurance is required to deliver and collect parcels and/or catalogues on behalf of Hermes. Additional insurance, on a third party only basis, can be provided at a daily rate to couriers who are undertaking deliveries or collections for Hermes via a QBE scheme.

In order to provide a courier service to Hermes couriers are required to complete an insurance decision letter, if a completed letter is not returned to Hermes the courier will be automatically included in the QBE scheme and charged accordingly.

Courier Liability

If, as a result of negligence or carelessness, a Courier causes damage to a customer’s or third party’s property, or cause injury to a customer or third party, the Courier is liable to the customer or third party for that damage or injury.

From Courier Owner Drivers forum
There are three types of insurance you should have:
• van insurance to cover you to use your van to carry goods for 'hire and reward' — this can be courier insurance or light haulage insurance depending on the type of work you do. this type of insurance, often called road risks insurance is a legal requirement.
• goods in transit (GIT) insurance to cover the goods you are carrying. this is not a legal requirement but often required by businesses you do work for
You should also have public liability insurance, but you probably don't need employer's liability.

These narrow margins these home delivery couriers operate on I wouldn't be surprised if proper courier insurance is overlooked.

There's one house I deliver to on a round that operates a van drop for Yodel, where a all the parcels are unloaded from the van in the middle of a residential street and sorted into about 10 cars for delivery. Probably only the van has the correct insurance. It looks well dodgy anyway.

I think this kind of practice should be looked at more closely by the authorities, because at the end of the day they are the competition and if they are undercutting RM by using illegal practices that should be stopped, maybe more customers will come back to RM then.
