A RENATIONALISED Royal Mail after independence would lose millions of pounds worth of profits to England, a damning new report by MPs is expected to say today.

Alex Salmond's flagship plans will come under criticism from the Commons Business Innovation & Skills (Bis) committee.

MPs are expected to warn a separate Royal Mail north of the Border would make nothing from the millions of letters and packages sent every year from England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Revenue is generated where post is sent, not where it is received, which means Scotland currently benefits from being part of a large UK-wide system, they argue.

The report is also expected to say it would be extremely expensive to buy back Royal Mail shares sold off to private investors by the Coalition and which have since soared in value.

The shares were sold at 330p last year and by January were trading at 615p, although their value has fallen since then.

In the wide-ranging report MPs are also expected to warn SNP plans to charge English students higher university fees than Scots after independence would be illegal under EU law.

They will also criticise Scottish finance secretary John Swinney for failing to give evidence to their inquiry - but a spokesman for Mr Swinney accused the committee of bias.

He said: "The fact a Westminster committee of anti-independence MPs has chosen to attack such policies speaks volumes."

He said that the Scottish Government was committed to public services, and accused the UK Government of a "privatisation agenda".

The First Minister originally asked Coalition ministers to delay the sale of the Royal Mail until after the independence referendum.

When that was rejected Mr Salmond made his surprise pledge to renationalise the Royal Mail if Scotland becomes independent. At the time officials said they could not estimate how much returning the company to public ownership would cost.

That's right "UK", so Scotland "owns" a good proportion of that.
No real answer to the problem of the cost of delivery to the Highlands and Islands though.
