Shrewsbury Royal Mail sorting office evacuated in smoke drama

The Royal Mail sorting office in Shrewsbury was evacuated when the basement filled with smoke.

But firefighters found the smoke had been sucked in through an air vent from outside where workmen were burning lines off the road.

The alarm was raised about 1pm yesterday and two fire crews from Shrewsbury went to the building in Castle Street.

Firefighters ventilated the basement and staff were back at work in under an hour.

Tean Treharne, watch manager, said: “We got a call to a possible fire in the sorting office so we sent two engines from Shrewsbury. When they arrived there was some smoke issuing into the basement. We went in with breathing apparatus but found no fire.

“We are putting the incident down to workmen nearby burning off some lines on the road and the smoke getting sucked into the building through an air vent.”
