I wasn't sure where to put this but as this is the closure rumour thread this will do.

A driver was telling me that Royal mail are starting another mail centre review in four years with more closures expected. How true this is I don't know but the distance between mail centres and delivery offices will surely start to become unworkable within the time constraints we have at the moment. Four years is a long time in this business though so who knows what form Royal Mail will be when/if this happens.

There is some truth to that and the rumour is that it will be based on efficiency and failure rates. To be honest this review will be a joke as most of the large MCs are failing because of the the distance and workload they have even thru they say the mail is going down.

There's probably three MCs where there is a ? about their future:

* Gatwick: On one of the proposed sites for the second runway so depending on which option for the 2nd runway is chosen, they might have to move.
* Greenford: Might be subject of a CPO for the building of HS2 so they might have to move (would there even be anywhere suitable for them to move to in central/inner London?)
* Southampton: The airport is up for sale so depending on the priorities of whoever the new owner is, they might be forced to move. Looking at where SO MC is atm that would be a prime site for the new owners of the airport if they wanted to build a second terminal

"Somebody" says a lot of things, and in the short-term they're probably safe (helped greatly by the closure of POMC), but it's a very poorly-performing office in the wrong location, and running crappy out-dated IMPs just to make matters worse.
Only a matter of time for SOMC, and they'll be on the new MTSF terms by then; namely a month's money and clear your locker out....

What sorting machines a given MC has means nothing as any MC can be emptied of all it's sorting machines in a week (maybe two if it's a TOPS 2k machine)

Indeed it can, if the machines are being scrapped and the space merely emptied.
It takes a long time to install new, as every thing from planning available floor space, floor loadings, cabling (both power and signalling, and the associated control gear, WAN/LAN connections and servers etc) lighting levels, manning levels, duties and resourcing (+ relevant training) and changes to the mail circulation for that area, etc etc all have to be planned, factored and costed and arranged.
Actually bolting the machines together and making them work is the very last (and probably easiest) step of all, but that's at the tail end of a very long process.
The stats tables don't lie Hubbles..attempting to personalise the argument doesn't alter anything either. OEE and failure rates for SOMC are abysmal. Fact.
