Royal Mail First World War Memorials Database Goes Live

Royal Mail has today published a searchable database of war memorials in its care as part of its First World War Centenary commemorations. http://www.royalmailmemorials.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; allows the public to search more than 300 individual memorials by name, location, keywords (for example the regiment of the fallen or rank) or by conflict.

More than 75,000 workers from the General Post Office fought in the First World War with 12,000 serving in the dedicated Post Office Rifles regiment, formed in the 1860s.

While many of the company’s war memorials were established after the First World War, the database also provides information on postal staff killed during the Boer War
(1899-1902), Second World War (1939-1945) and Gulf War (1990-1991).

there our 2 war memorials at Ipswich mail centre. 1 for the great war, 1 for world war 2. there was a memorial at the old head post office in Ipswich to the fallen, rumour has it that when this building was sold, the memorial was thrown in a skip. I pray this is not the truth, but the said plaque has never been seen since.
