Pitiful response from Royal Mail

The effort to replace a post box in Haywards Heath which fell down three months ago has been described as ‘pitiful’.

An old-style brick pillar-box at the corner of Sheppeys and Ashenground Road. which was already leaning for some time, fell to the ground on Easter Monday.

A Royal Mail spokesperson has said that it has not replaced the post box yet because a number of surveys and checks have to be completed first.

John Burke, a retired resident of Ashenground Road, has said the response was not good enough when residents - many of whom are elderly and unable to walk far in this heat - were having to travel miles to their nearest postbox.

He said: “They probably want to replace it with a metal one but even so all it needs temporarily is a couple of strong men to lift it up right on firm mortar.

“Royal Mail’s excuse if pitiful. It’s only £50 worth of work.

“It means that some residents, including many pensioners, must now go a mile to post their letters.”

John said that he wrote on May 31 to the Royal Mail’s chief executive, Moya Greene, without getting a reply.

He added: “You could say it’s a hazard for dog walkers on the grass and people in the dark but the main thing is it’s one half an hour’s work to build it up to the right height.”

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “We are in the process of replacing this postbox.

“There are a number of checks that have to be made before a new postbox can be erected, including underground services, local authority planning checks as well as a review of siting. This schedule is in progress.”

No, it's "miles to their nearest postbox" then “a mile to post their letters.”
But "many of whom are elderly" so might be forgetful and go more than once a day.
