It is not good, but the good rep know the rules and system and problems and solution so this is why they are chosen for management rather than a random postie. Management doesn't know our skills as they don't use our skills or find out what we can do.
We need protection from union as we don't want to see people to suffer drop of wages especially on 20-28 hours contract employee. I can see many of them walk out for new jobs and the quality will suffer.

Re: Union Reps becoming RM managers ???
I've been asked, but I couldn't do it, the reason I became a rep was to try and make sure the people got what they were entitled to, rather than trying to screw every last drop out of people. Not sure how you can think as a rep one week and the next start thinking as a manager.
Not sure being a manager is any safer job wise than being a OPG any way.

Re: Union Reps becoming RM managers ???
on my local rep induction course, the trainer told me the cwu was different to other unions, with the influence it had on the day to day running of things. this was a worry to me, as I thought of myself as the next che Guevara and wanted nothing to do with the hated management. there are pluses and minuses to this position. if there's a good rep on site, agreements can help all members. if there's a dodgy one, they tend to look after a select band, usually of one. and the dodgy ones usually like the taste of power, and some take the next step to management.

Thanks for all your thoughts
I quite like this one...
A lot of our guys have been on TEMPORARY full-time contracts (39 hour) for the last few years in the office. The CWU want a workforce that is 3/4 full-time, 1/4 part-time. Ive just read the legal contract for the Union and the Royal Mail which states
"Employees will not be employed on a temporary contract exceeding two years unless it has been agreed by the Company and the CWU that there are very exceptional circumstances. The position of temporary contract Employees will be kept under regular review, with a view to converting to permanent contracts where and when possible."
So lets hope its a full-time permanent contract for 39 hours and not less.....otherwise I will not be doing any more of the unpaid lapsing which we do everyday

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Its been happening for years all over the country in many businesses that are unionised.
Its called buying them off, keeping your enemies on your side.
Almost every one has their price !

not sure how you are on min wage unless you were "promised" loads of O/T and now living on 20+ish hours, the pay rate remains the same.
here there is massive cull brewing, the "runners" are oblivious and probably safe anyway so they're not bothered about others, our rep used to be very militant towards those above, but now in their pocket
but does nothing to protect our jobs, he'll quite happily stand and watch a manager prep/walk a duty to cut the overtime despite my protests.
but so many get "looked after" and are on different rules nothing will get done
hence no onion subs = an extra holiday

Re: Union Reps becoming RM managers ???
Is it to hard to understand but if you are on my contract I am effectively on minimum wage as I only bring Home the minimum wage each week but as I stated earlier at least I don't have to work a full week like I did in my last job

Yes.terry2972 wrote:Is it too hard to understand .....
The minimum wage is about £6.50 and you are paid £10/hr.
Your p/t contract may mean you take home the same as you did with a f/t job on the minimum wage but you aren't being paid the minimum wage.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
